Sat I spent the day on a guide trip on Waconia. The lake access was rather busy due to the Metro Muskie Tournament going on, but the shallow bass spots we planned to hit were wide open for us. We started throwing stickworms in the reeds with little success. Normally this would be a pattern a guy could fish all day catching fish non stop. We next pulled out to a sandy inside weedline and managed a couple fish, but not the size and numbers we were looking for either. Next we went and worked some inside weedlines off some docks and started to connect. We managed a ton of 2lb fish, quite a few over 3lbs, and 5 over 4lbs. In one instance I casted to the end of a dock, had a hit and missed it. My client for the day then casted there, had a hit as well and pulled out a 6+lb largie that came unbuttoned before getting in the boat. Definatly got the blood pumping.
We also fished some rocks and caught fish there as well. We didn’t spend much time fishing the deeper milfoil, but I would assume there are a few fish there as well, and that bite will only get better. If you are looking to chase sunfish, they were loaded in 5-6′ on the south shore. Their beds made the bottom look like a golf ball, and there were some nice sized fish. The crappies appear to have left the shallows. After talking with some of the muskie anglers, it souded like dark colored bucktails were getting follows, but I didn’t hear of any legal sized fished boated. We did catch a 13" walleye on some shallow rocks on a white tube. We also had 2 more small ones following our bait. These fish were in les than 6′. Wish I would have had some leeches with!
I need to get my neighbor and his litte boy down there it sounds like. The little guy is 4 and has never been fishing but keeps asking when I’m going to take him in the boat. I better make plans this week while the fish are shallow. thanks for the great report Mike!!!
thanks Mike,
I have always loved Waconia. I just need to get over there a little more often. I have always thought It to be one of the metro s best lakes. Jack..
