Summer walleyes
summer walleyes is my favorite times of the year. Most pro’s and everday anglers will say fall and spring is the best chance for a trophy walleye for the wall which I don’t disagree. But all my trophys for the wall have came in late June or July and August.
Check out the rest of my report to see how I CPR 25 inch + walleyes like this one.
Now what do I mean by summer walleyes
water temps have to be in the 78 to 80 degree range or higher which came very early this year. There’s two techniques that I use to catch big walleyes like this one on the left. First techniques is vertical jigging the river and the second is cast jigs and live bait or plastics. If you use these two techniques you will sooner or later catch walleye like the one on the left which all of these big walleyes I did CPR.
This year there’s three reasons why the walleye bite is so good on the rock river this summer. Number one, bait fish spawning, number two, cooler water in the river in some places, and this year number three the white bass fry hatch. Usally the white bass hatch is done and gone before water temps reach 80. Because of these three reasons I have been catching walleyes over 25 inches like this one on the right.
Ok, now it’s time to let the air out of the bag and tell you all how I caught these awesome walleyes.
I always start off in the summer with live bait until I find out how active the walleyes are. If the walleyes are on a biting frenzing I always go to plastics. The plastics of choice was the paddle tails by B-fish-N tackle Company and a 1/8oz pink/white nuckle ball jig by Fin-tech tackle Company or the jig of your choice but the pink/white nuckle ball jig by fin-tech work the best to catch walleyes like these on the left which these four walleyes I took home for a fish fry for my mother and family. Most of my fish came in three fow or less in cooler water or on clam beds. Some of the walleyes were caught up in the channel of the mouth of the river going into lake Koshkonong in 8 to 9 fow, but the biggest walleyes were caught on clams bed at the mouth of the river which was going out of the lake on the west side by Newville. Good fish are being caught trolling on Koshkonong on the rock piles and by the springs. Also the big white bass are also on a biting frenzy on the lake. The algae bloom is bad but all that means is shade for the fish and a pain in the butt for the trollers. But if you use a little split shot above your crank bait it will help you keep the green slim off your bait.

Great info as usual Jeff. Nice fish. Now I have to decide what I want to do, where I want to fish, and how long do I give it. Reading your posts always make me think too much
Good insight to understanding the forage base and predetor/prey relationships on the Rock
Thanks and maybe I will see ya this weekend.

OK, OK, OK Jeff…you got me motivated to get the lead out of my butt and get the boat rigged.
Actually, its pretty much set to go for inland…just got some Lake Michigan rigging to do. But work keeps getting in the way. Gonna have to get my priorities straight , I guess. thanks for the uplifting report. Diesel, I take it you’re all healed up now??
Good going Jeff,
. I plan on fishing the Rock down here this Sunday. Keep those report coming.
Those are some fine looking fish
Hey Z good to hear from ya!!
Yeah I am pretty much healed up still have some discomfort but the therapist is working on that. Fired the boat up last night, checking lights and electonics, ya know, the stuff you do when you are getting ready for early spring fishing
. Looks like I got some maintenance to do but I WILL be out sat morning or evening.
Chomping a the bit to try out the new planer boards and rods.

First time trolling, good luck,
I remember when I did it the first time.

PS. I went out with friends a few times before I made my first try at it and it helped out a ton. I would have never did it right on my own.
Nice post / report Jeff…Love those paddletails
I have been doing real good on the smallies up on P-9 nad P-10 when I can get out
Yeah I have pulled boards a long time ago but with limited success. At least this time I will be rigged for it. I will be taking a second set of hand so hopefully there won’t be to many tangled lines

Great report Jeff! Nice pictures too!
I had some good luck with the smaller Knuckleballs threaded through the mouth of a Shiner minnow drifted along the weedline breaks also last summer for some nice Eyes and Smallies!
