Hook and I just completed a week of pre-fishing and competing in the 20th annual Wave Wacker walleye tournament on Mille Lacs. The weather has been some what on the wet side to say the least! you really need to own some good rain gear order to stay dry. We spent our time and did located some active fish. That was the key this week, as many of the fish might be there one day only to have them move on another.
We found active walleye willing to bite on three mud flats. During the week many hours and fuel were spent searching for the right combination. We rigged 10-12 foot lindy rig’s with leeches on the edges of the flats. These fish were active some mid morning and others mid afternoon. You just had to sit on them and grind it out!
Hook and I weighed in 12 1/2 lbs just acouple of slots out of the money……the contest was won by Phil Erickson and Mike Gannon with a total weight of 30.38 lbs. Second place went to Leo and Leon Houle with 30.29 lbs. This was Phil and Mike’s second Wave Wacker win in back to back years! Great job guy’s.
If you are planning a trip to Mille Lacs. The shallow rock bite is good just before dark and look for the mud bite to improve with the warming water temperatures. Don’t forget to give the smallmouth a try also. BFT jig’s tipped with a gold speckled K-grub will provide some action for you! Look to the shallow rocks on the shorelines and reefs. Also mark your calendar for the Hunters Point Walleye Tournament June 24th and 25th. This tourney is a fun well run event by George Nitti at Hunter’s. Hope to see ya there……..
Let’s hope for some nice weather!!!
Look forward to seeing you guys next weekend!
Take care!
