Anvil Lake & Eagle River Vilas Co. Fishing Report

Anvil Lake is at it’s prime right now and it’s a perfect time to take a kid fishing to catch big small mouth, rock bass and big slab crappies and practice CPR. Here’s a picture of what kind of crappies you can expect to catch. Check out the rest of my report to find out what I did to catch Crappies like in this picture & small mouth and rock bass.

This lake is very clear and low fishing pressure on the weekdays. There’s only one boat launch which is very hard to launch a big boat becauce of the low water. Anything over 20′ will be tough. All the crappies I caught were in three to nine fow. Lots of these crappies were on cribs or at the end of a big 8′ log. At the other end of the log would be a small mouth bed with a smallie on it. It was really neat how these fish would share a 8′ log. What I did to catch the nice crappies was use a slip float with a #6 gold hook and a med fathead. After I caught the crappies I would catch that big smallie at the other end of the log which I would pitch a 1/8oz Day-brite jig by Fin-tech Tackle Co. with some powerbait leeches or a fin-claw or sometimes live bait. I would use what ever it would take to catch these fish, it always worked which would result with fish like this one on the left.

On last Friday I donated my guide service for Fishing Has No Boundaries which is for the disable anglers. There was over 150 disable anglers ready to fish the Eagle River chain. I started off taking my angler to Catfish Lake where I new of some cribs that hold some walleyes which were small but the action was fast. After a long day on the water we boated lots of small walleyes, perch, rock bass and a couple small crappies. All the fish were small but these anglers didn’t care as long as they caught fish. After the event I had to boat back to the launch. To do that I had to motor back on the Eagle River which I decide to do some more fishing because I had three hours of light left which is prime time. As all you know me as a river rat on the rock river I thought I would try some of my techqunices on the Eagle River which paid off. Here’s a sample of what I caught on the right.

I started off fishing the 45 bridge pillars hoping to produce walleyes like I do at Newville WI on the 59 bridge. The condition were perfect but didn’t produce. So my next move was to pitch the wood in 3 to 4 fow by the shore and bingo. I lost a few jig pitching in the wood but in the long run it paid off like this this walleye on the left in this picture. I caught 15 walleyes on one fallen tree in about one hour which I will never forget this outing and can’t wait until next year and if the wife will let me I will be up there after the 4th of July.

With this comment, why would we need to click on the picture to make it larger when you are already stretching your arms out to full length to make your fish look bigger…this looks tacky…Great report and real nice fish though

  5. Good to hear from you Cory, I had a blast the 4 nights I was up there. I caught so many fish I got tennis elbow. The weekdays after the 4th of July 7/6, 7/7 & 7/8 I will be prefish Mendota for the weekend for Fishing Has No Boundaries. It would be great one of these days we could hook up in the afternoon so you could put me on fish faster.

  6. Cory, I’m waiting for your call. I need to start prefish now for Fishing Has No Boundaries the second weekend in July. I have the whole week off after the 4th to prefish. I want to make sure I catch fish for these disable anglers. It would save me tons of time if you would work with me.

920-563-8923 I scan all call so leave a message, if I don’t answer leave your phone # and a good time to call you. I lost your email also so please get that to me some how to.

  7. Jeff, will you be available July 23-39th at all for a days guide service? We come up and stay at Anvil every year, and I’d really like to learn the tricks of the Northwoods fishing. Let me know. I tried to email ya, about this and it got returned for some strange reason.
