Mille Lacs Smallies on the Opener

Mille Lacs was a sheet of glass Saturday. Not good for the guys fishing the FLW for walleye, but fantastic for smallies on the big pond. The fish are in excellent physical condition, and really have the feed bag on!

Anthony Carfagna of Coon Rapids was my Bass Assasin for the bass opener on Saturday. We hit points and saddles on and off of the main lake. Bass were huge to say the least. Our fish averaged 3.5 to 4.5 pounds on the digital scale. Our largest was 19.5 inches, and just about jumped in the boat with us when she hit!

Hot baits for the day were B-Fish-N Tackle Paddle Tails and K-Tails. Paddle tails were of the Blue/Glitter variety, and the K-Tails Silver/Black and Pumkinseed. Both baits were hung on BFT H20 Jigs of 3/16 oz.

Most if not all of the fish were females with huge tummies. When they came to the boat, they would puke out fish, and other goodies. They were abviously gorging on perch and such. The would hit with such force that your heart would stop! I tried them for a bit on Sunday morning on my own. I had one about 4 pounds hit, shake the lure only to have another fish scream in and hit it! Also a 4 pounder! The bite should get better as it warms up. The walleye were cooperating, and came to the boat with regularity. We managed a few limits for fish frys, and Tony took some home. The size ranges were all over the map. The population is quite diverse this year. Congrats to Josh Hukriede for taking 19th in his first Pro/Am during the FLW tourney held this weekend on Mille Lacs. I heard a couple of other IDA’ers did well too on the Am. side! Have a great week! Off to Red Lake next weekend to chase some Mombo Slab crappie!

  1. That is an excellent report Tuck. I dont think that their is a creature more beautiful than the Mille Lacs Smallmouth. I hit the Upper Miss today and had to work pretty hard for 11 smallies between two guys. A few nice fish, but not nearly as PLUMP as those fish

  2. Chris,
Super nice Smallies, sure are fat. WOW.
also can’t wait for your URL report. Keep those pics coming.
    thanks Jack..

  3. Great report Chris

Now my turn to find those fish as I will be them Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully little or no wind.

Thanks for the advise on the splashguards. My wife bought me a set of Whitecaps for my Bday.

  4. Thanks for the report Chris. Sometimes people forget about the bass on a walleye factory like Mille Lacs but I keep hearing about how great the bass fishing is on the big lake. Sounds like you have been having way too much fun since you went with the Alumacraft tiller boat and E-tec motor. Thanks for the report.
    Thanks, Bill

  5. The smallies provided some fun in my boat Saturday noon and again last evening! I found some fish up tight along a rocky shoreline in 2-4 feet of water. The size of the smallies were around 16-18+ really nice and fat as Tuck had mentioned earlier.
I caught my fish on a gold speckled K-Grub on a 1/8 oz B-Fish-N-Tackle H20 jig. I like using a small jig when working in this shallow of water. The smallies action should only improve from this time forward…….nice pic’s Tuck! maybe next time you can jump in my boat and be my camera guy…….it’s difficult to take photos when you are fishing alone

  6. Thanks guys….I think…
Bobber mentioned light jigs. The reason I went heavier was that I noticed a lot of biters hitting the jig next to the boat. So we moved out deeper, threw on the 3/16 jigs, and pitched them way in. We spooked far fewer fish this way, and stayed on the school a little longer. I can’t wait to get back up there!
Good luck to y’all! I am in Chicago for the week.
But! Red Lake this weekend with ElRoy for the Mombo Crappies, and Huge Pike!
    Take care!
    Tuck
