Ottertail County Minnesota Walleye Report 5-23-05

I got a chance to hit a few lakes in the Battle Lake, Minnesota area this past weekend. Overall, the bite was poor. Many of the lakes were still very cold and that may have had a negative impact on the bite. The shallower lakes in the area produced better, and were a little warmer of course. We did manage to get some walleye to cooperate. This first picture is my wife Tamara with a 19 inch ‘eye.

Our best technique was pulling spinners with fathead minnows. The fatheads out-produced the shiners for us. Depths were 5-15 feet. No solid pattern was established. We tried crank baits with nothing to show but I did observe some of the locals having fair success on cranks at night. I’ll be back to try it again this weekend. Good luck to everyone on the bass opener this weekend.

I am a freak for the outdoors. I mainly fish walleye and smallies but I'll fish for just about anything that swims. I joined the IDO staff in 2003 and enjoy being on the Management Team. I Full Bio ›

  1. Thanks for the report Wade… that walleye Tamara is holding looks alot bigger than 19″…! Good camera work goes a long way, eh?!

  2. She either has it pushed forward a bit or she has a really small head. LOL I think she likes to make it look like she catches bigger fish than me.

  3. LOL…. that’s funny buddy. And we do know who catches all the big fish. I think I remember a couple MONSTER bass from last year and if memory serves me, you were behind the camera on those as well.

But I can appreciate the downfalls of being the guide.

  4. I am VERY jealous……I HATE having to wait until August to get up there Wade….you are killing me! Thanks for the report and good looking fish!

  5. Wade forgot to mention that we had our 3 year old daughter with us. She was sooo good and let us fish lots. Here is a picture of her in the boat.

  7. Try giving Big Pine a try.I was out today with my two sons and we managed 8 eye’s in three hours.we kept 3 for supper.Their is a slot on the lake so make sure that the 18-26 inchers go back.I released three over 18″.Lindy rig with leech’s or Redtail’s seems to be the ticket.Good luck.

  8. Rigging Guy – I’ve never tried Big Pine but may have to give it a shot. Thanks for the info! Sounds like you guys had a great time!
