The spring season is hitting full stride here in the Nisswa area. The walleye fishing is pretty good as is the crappie action. On Gull Lake we’ve seen some very good activity for walleyes in the evenings. Lindy rigs with a plain hook and shiners have produced lots of 13-16 inch fish. Some larger fish have been caught out deeper on Jigs and shiners. The best locations have been Grassy Point, Dutchman’s Bluff and the south end of the lake. Most fish have been caught in 16-24 feet of water. We’ve also caught a few fish on Round Lake in the same depths. The pike fishing has been great on the Gull chain. Sucker minnows have produced pike up to 10 pounds in the last week. The crappie fishing has really turned on as the fish are starting to go up on the spawning beds. Big Black crappies are hitting crappie minnows or Puddle Jumpers on many of the smaller lakes in the area. As the water warms up this week look for the sunfish to join them. Use small leeches for the bigger sunnies. The next ten days will be some of the best fishing we will experience all season. Be sure to get out and enjoy it. Good Luck!

Hey Jason im going too be on North Long over the holiday weekend and was curious if you had any info on how that lake has been?
Hi James, North Long hasn’t received the same attention that our other lakes have seen for the first ten days of the season. From the reports that I have heard I think it has been decent. Overall I think the evening and Night bite has been the best. I’d start by looking at the first break or up on the shallow sand in the evenings. Lindy Rigs tipped with shiners or leeches, or try pulling rapalas after dark. The sunfish and crappies have also been on a good bite. North long has some dandies. You may have to search a little once you arrive but I think you should do OK. Good Luck.

Jason, the wifey and I are headed up to pine mountain at backus on the 4th for 7 days or so. Just curious if ya can give me a water temp on gull, or the brainerd lakes? We’re really thinkin on a crappie day trip to your area, any best bets, should be on the beds by then im guessing? Thanks for any help in advance John
Hi John the water temps on Gull during the past week have been from mid to upper 50s. The crappies are up on the beds on most of our lakes. The smaller lakes I’d guess would have water temps in the low 60s. You should hit the tail end of the crappies spawn and the Bluegills should be coming up on the beds. Good Luck!
