Rock River Walleye Report, Mothers Day Weekend

The walleye bite has been up and down this spring. For me spring always has been a tough bite. Everyday weather can changes from cold fronts to thunder storms to sunny hot days. This makes walleye fishing very tough, but if you hang in there and put in you time you can go home with a nice limit walleyes for the dinner table or for CPR like these I caught which this day it was for mothers day dinner.

I had vacation Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and my plan was to turkey hunt in the morning and fish in the afternoon. Never did get my turkey but did catch fish. Wednesday a friend of mine said he would try to call in a turkey for me if I would take him walleye fishing. I told my friend you got a deal. Wednesday didn’t pan out for a turkey but we did manage to catch some walleyes and a pike. We started off vertical jigging nuckle ball jigs with leeches and crawlers. I tied on a 3/8oz nickle nuckle ball jig for Brian which might have been a little heavy for 6 to 7 fow but I wanted to make sure he could feel the bottom which is key to catch these walleyes. I used 1/4oz nuckle ball jigs by www.fin-techco.comin the nickle and glow/green color. After our first drift Brian caught this nice pike which we CPR.

We thought we were really going to have a great day after Brian caught that pike on the first drift. But that wasn’t the case, we did catch fish but we had to work for them. On this day most of our fish were caught jigging live bite in 6 to 7 fow behind wingdams and by bridge pillers. here’s a keeper walleye Brian caught by the bridge pillar.

Well just to let all you anglers know that spring fishing is tough on the Rock River at least for me. Thursday I came real close to getting my turkey and after turkey hunt I never caught a fish. man I was really confusednow. But I hung in there and Friday paid off. Friday was a awesome day for turkey hunting and walleye fishing. First off I had four gobblers come in at 45 yards which I missed the shot but after it started to rain I left and went home to take a nap and then went fishing which made up for the miss shot and went home with a limit of eyes for mothers day dinner and here was the biggest eye on the left whiched I CPR.

  3. Great report Jeff. It always brings a smile to my face when I see family’s out there doing things together. Keep it coming pal.

  4. Hi Jeff,

I always look forward to your posts as they keep me coming back for fish. My question is this: Where are the wing dams on the Rock? I knew there were wing dams on the Mississippi River although I did not know there were any on the Rock. Keep up the great posts as they make us try harder for fish and they are very informative.

  5. First off, welcome aboard tipjig

Where are the wingdams you ask, hmmm

Well you know tipjig if I tell you where my wingdams are it would be kind of cheating. I have fished hard and for a long time to find far and few between. I only know where a couple are that are in enough water to produce fish. So for me to tell you where the wingdams are . I’ll have to think about this one tipjig. I’ll get back to you with a PM. Thanks for the support.

  6. Hey Jeff.
Nice report and nice fish. Glad to see the family out there with you catching fish. The togetherness is much needed and something the kids will never forget.

  7. Jeff,

Thanks for getting back. I did not want you to give away any secret spots. (Ha Ha) I will however look for wing dams as I really did not know there were any on the Rock.

Thanks again for the great reports!

  8. tipjig once again welcome to the site, you will find out this site is the best in the USA. Now as far as wingdams on the rock river and where are some located. Lets thinks about this now, wingdams, think of a wing of a bird how it looks. Dam think about what a dam is. All in all this wingdam can be in size from five yards long to 20 yards long or even bigger. But the one’s that I fish are from five to 20 yards long. A wingdam is like a wing that shoots out from shore and in some cases it could be right dab in the middle of the river I guess. It is some kind of structure that breaks the current. The wingdams that I fish are rock structure that shoot out from shore in 7 fow water and the rock structure come up to four fow and on the back side of the dam it’s 7 fow again. So look for stuff like that, fallen trees also act like wingdams, anything that breaks the current could also be call a wingdam I guess. tipjig if you look for structure like I have mention you should have great fishing action. But remember there has to be enoungh water to hold fish
