We only got out for a few hours late this afternoon. Corey Waller AKA Cwallerbass1 was my copilot. But that was all it took to find some active post spawn females in some off current areas known for putting up big fish. Crank baits, Shad Raps, and small stick baits pulled upstream were the ticket.
The fish didn’t even seem to mind if we were pulling upstream, downstream, sideways to current, anything worked. The key was to be close to bottom. Sand was a must, current breaks were better than main currnet stretches. Depths we hit were 3-9 feet of water. The water clarity should improve as the spring progresses. She was plenty stained yet today.
Much of the debris is gone, streches of river now have new structure that was non-existent last fall. I was trolling a stretch when the boat came to a dead STOP! It put Corey right into his seat! There had to have been a large branch or stump hidden just below the surface. We had been over that area a number of times, with no problem! It still pays to go slow when you are not sure about the area.
We also keyed on areas where seagulls were diving, and that paid off with a few very big white bass. Corey got all of them. I was blessed with my largest sheepie of the year. Darn camera just wouldn’t (Couldn’t!) work for the picture! LOL! It worked just fine for the next Eye we boated though! We plan to get back out Sunday when it warms up, and quits raining as expected.
Happy Mothers Day to all the Mom’s out there!
Tight Lines!

Nice fish Tuck!!
WOW!! what a day, thanks for the seat Tuck. Every time I fish with you we hammer em’. are you tryin’ to convert me to the dark side?? if this keeps up I’ll be all done with the bass tourneys and be startin’ the walleye tourneys. well I probably wont go the far but I sure had fun. thanks again, see ya on sunday!! wallerbass1
The main channel was hot today! Most of our fish came on #7 Shad Raps off of channel edges. Here is Scott Olson with a couple of eaters…
Tuck,
I fished the P3 wingdams on Sunday morning but found it kind of slow. In five hours I only caught three walleyes (two at 19″ and a 23″). I found a wingdam that had a bunch of smallies on it but they were all small (10-12″). I could catch one about every third cast but I stopped after about a half dozen without any decent ones.
Looks like I should have trolled like you did. I really expected a better wingdam bite. The current was low enough to fish several, or at least parts of several, wingdams. Were you out in the morning or afternoon?
Boone
Afternoon. Fish were scattered, and it took a while to contact them. I figure we are about 2 weeks away from the good wing dam bites if the weather stays good.
Hope to see you out there!
Tuck
I’ve got some turkey hunting to do, then I’ll be out there. I heard two toms gobbling pretty good around 9:30 Sunday morning… too bad they’re in the wrong zone for me. It sounded like they were only about 150 yds in from the shore.
Thanks for the info.
