April 16 Jerkbaitin Pool 10 Bass

After a long winter, I finally got to put my boat in the water and do some fishing!! My brother and I fished all day Saturday in the rain and it was well worth it! We found the bass relating to points as they were pulling out of the backwaters that they moved into when the water went up. The points that producded the best were between 3 and 5 FOW and had grass submerged with some rock mixed in. The best presentation that we found was throwing Rogues and Husky Jerks, we used a variety of retrieves from very rapid to a jerk and then a long pause. Here is a healthy 3 lb. bass that nailed a Rogue.

After throwing jerkbaits, I found bass in flooded timber with 1-3 FOW. The best wood was the stuff located way in the back closest to the bank. A stout 7′ 6" Quantum rod with 30 lb. Power Pro helped me flip my 1/2 oz. black/blue jig with blue chunk and haul the bass out of the thick cover. After fishing all day in the rain, my brother and I managed to catch 40 bass with 13 of the bass being legal fish.

While throwing my Rogue around some rip-rap I did manage to land this nice healthy walleye.

I only had a few hours to fish Sunday before heading back to school, so we went back to work on our jerkbait pattern and it was still working. Only today, the bass wanted the jerk and long pause retrieve apposed to a fast paced approach. We managed to finish the morning off with 5 legal fish along with a handful or shorts.

This was a great weekend to get out and enjoy the river. My keys to the the weekend I think were the presense of baitfish, cover, and locations that the bass were posistiong themselves on as they are pulling out of the shallow dropping water.
