After reading all these reports about big walleyes being caught up and down the river, I decided to take the day of Thursday and try my luck. Joining me in the boat was AmWatson. When Mike arrived at my house, I posed the question of whether we should head to the Dresbach dam for a guaranteed bite or put in on pool 7 and do our best to see what our luck would bring. We opted for the latter.
We tried many wingdams looking for some ‘eyes until this one hit Mike’s ringworm. This happened to be Mike’s first Walleye pitching plastics on wingdams. The bite for us wasn’t very productive. We boated a couple 15" Sauger and another Walleye in the 18" range.
The real day-saver was finding a wingdam loaded with some nice sized Smallies like the one Mike is holding. This fish fell victim to a Fire & Ice ringworm on a 1/4 oz H2O jig head. Even in this cold water, these Smallies pull like mules.
The las two Smallies pictures were also caught on ringworms, but the color this time was Firecracker. I have to admit, this is the earliest I can remember getting into a school of Smallies. We caught quite a few, and almost had a double! Like I said, finding these fish sure made the day better.
The flow on pool 7 is very low. The light southerly wind we had for the day made fishing wingdams a real treat. It was just enough of a wind to keep the boat in position without keeping a foot on the trolling motor at all times.
Special thanks go out to Mike for going out on the water with me Thursday. I look forward to doing it again real soon! ;waytogo:
Nice fish guys arn’t those smallies fun!
Yes, they are fun. I took my Dad back to that spot and boated a dandy on the first cast! He turned, looked at me and said “that doesn’t take long does it….”
Staying on top of these fish will be the real challenge.
Nice fish, Blue and Watson!
Nice fish Gentlemen!
I’m hoping to get into the eyes on pool 2 this afternoon. I’m also hoping if the eyes don’t cooperate something else will. Its always nice when other fish decide to make your day!

Thanks Blue for showing me around the river and then getting us into the smallies, they are a blast I can still feel the thump when those smallies smack the ringworms Blue was a great host and REALLY knows that pool. There were so many wingdams that I didn’t even see until we started fishing them I had a blast and can’t wait to do it again
Nice fish! sounds like you had a good time.Nothing like hard fighting smallies to put the fun in a day
Great report and nice fish
Smallies are a tug of war for sure and they pound a lure when they hit it. They look like they still have thier light winter coloring. One of my favorite ways to hookup a lure for them is to use a little joe spinner, they have the spring that you pull down and put your hook on then pull the spring back up and then put on a 2 in crawfish. All you have to do is just pull it by them over the rocks. When they see the flash of the blade they come running.
