With everyone calling us to tell us that they’ve been pounding bass all week, We finally got a chance to get out and take a look for ourselves. The Deuce, BC, and myself piled into the Ranger in search of what ever we could get into.
We started off fishing wingdams on the main channel, but to tell you the truth, i’m not much on using walleye tactics for smallmouth. We were throwing Ringworms, plastics, tubes, whatever….but that just isn’t my style…so we left in search for some Largies…
We crept our way back to "the spot" and started throwing. Naturally we were looking for a pattern so were all throwing different baits. Duece had the hot bait today. He was using a small blue holographic crankbait,..casting up on the bank and using a VERY SLOW retrieve back into about 3.5′ ft. of water. B.C. and I tied on similar cranks, but it was that hologram crank Deuce was throwing that was the trick. They weren’t very big in size, but we had fun..and that’s what counts.
The fish for the most part weren’t holding near the bank…We were in a relatively shallow body of water anyway….Most strikes were coming about 10 ft. out from shore. We ran up and down the surrounding area’s, but it was one 50yd stretch that produced any fish. The wind was blowing up on that stretch of bank, and i think that might have been the difference.
Slops first post
a few backwards but good to see you can correct them MR. IT Tech.
Thanks for the report and can’t wait for more better one’s to come.
PS. I remember my first report.

good to see someones catchen some bass. ya know the water is still pretty cold when theres a an ice chunk in your picture
Is that 3 pics of the same fish???
So Deuce handed you guys your
yesterday! Way to go Deuce!
Oh and Deuce……..nice shades!
There’s a lot of smack starting already.
I can’t believe I have to wait 2 more months to chase bass on Minnetonka.
Yeah, I caught the only fish, but if you ask the others, Slop put me on the fish, and BC told me what to throw…
Overall it was a good time
, even though our faces looked and felt like
from windburn.
C’mon down to LAX sometime NK and I’ll hand you your
!
First, you’ll have to put the walleye gear aside though and go buy some BASS gear!

I was okay with Deuce catching the fish, as long as someone did.
A good day on the river… and plenty more to come.
I just wish I could’ve posted the picture of the Gar I caught!

All talk and no action BC……….
First you need to invite me to come fishing with you, and then I’ll hand you your
! Which is why I think you haven’t invited me yet……….your affraid to lose to a woman
Don’t worry BC…..I’ll be easy on ya!
off of goose island? there is a lot of boats suddenly starting to go down there….i will be!
???
We weren’t any where near goose
But that area is all open….
goose is a good early season spot
Gettin’ out this week, Dan?
all hooked up now BC
Slop and I got out this evening and threw some more cranks and spinners in the slough on pool 8. We only yielded this one 2lb Largemouth that I caught on a crank, but still good to get out.
But that area is all open….
BC, two questions: how big was the crankbait, and how murky was the water? today the clearest water i could find was a small patch of water that was open right next to the ice..
that is also where i got my only hit(below)
WEll, i was down at goose today, it was such a nice day but didnt actually get one. I had one little hit on a blue holografic crank bait(following the instructions) but i just couldnt get anything going. Planning to hit the boat though soon and get out on some main channel wing dams…might pick up a smallie or two while im up there
…After i got back from goose, i headed up the valley to the trout stream, which you can read about under stream trout, and it was a waist of my time. The water was brown, and everything was flooded and considerably colder due to the run off. Better luck TOMORROW!!!!!!

The water was really murky all over to be honest. It was hard throwing cranks with all of the crap floating in the water. I managed to hook into this one in a 10ft pocket just off the current. I was using a 2.5″ holographic crank that dives 5 to 6 ft.
You couldn’t find anything down by Goose? This is a better time of year to find smallies on wingdams, but we haven’t found anything that works quite yet.
The area we tried today ended up having way to much current running through it. If you look at the picture of BC, that fish came off to the right of that tree stump on shore. The Current was coming from off to the left, and a separate slough broke off other way…There was a deeper hole there that run up into that shallow cut. He was right where he should’ve been….sitting there in the slack water waiting for something to come by. I also think the water we were in was TOO shallow. The other day and today the fish we caught came in 3-5+ ft of water….and this spot was the only area that matched it.
We’re gonna head out again tomorrow and see what we can come up with
BigFish,
I apologize for this bad picture, but this is the crank we’ve been throwing. Kinda of gives you an Idea…
I’ll try to get a better pic tomorrow
Awesome!
good luck out there, i will be out there too, with Fish27, who NEVER EVER POSTS ANYTHING! i think i will change that soon!thanks a lot for the info. I had the impression that you were probably throwing tiny little cranks so thats what i was doing. ill have to try it a little differently today.
THANKS~!
How’d you fair today bigfish?
Once again, i only had a few hits, but i should have caught the one. Things are really not to great at goose island, but the crappies are starting to bight. i think i am almost ready to give up on the bass for a couple of weeks and start targeting walleye again.
im not to great at fishing bass this time of year. Im more of a buzzbait/spinner kinda guy.
I did manage to go to my friends house and fish in their trout pond. That was no better! I ended up catching a nice rock bass, about 10 inches, but the trout werent biting anything. I might try again today, but i will have to dodge those “isolated thunderstorms”
GOOD LUCK OUT THERE
