3/20 Fly Fishing Outing

I fished today from about 10:00-1:00, and after a walk in and a walk out, I had had enough. Streams were in very good condition, but I’m sure some suffered from the ice cube effect by 2:00 today with snow melt entering the stream and actually lowering water temperature despite it being pretty nice out.

Obviously I didn’t encounter anyone else, and I had to clear my way in with fresh tracks. I fished an ice dub scud most of the day until the very end when a few midges started to fly around, so I added a Simpleton Midge trailer and picked up a few that way.

Heard a few turkeys gobbling in the valley I was in. It felt spring like today, but it sure didn’t look like it.

  1. Thanks for the update Dave!
I do take some clients out on the sreams here occassionally as part of my guiding…but I really miss the time I used to spend on the stream. I have been an FFF & TU member for many years.
If gas prices soar like predicted my boat will get some R&R and the waders will do the walking a LOT more!
I would love to connect with you sometime and wet a line…more like JUNEish when the bigger bugs get active, and the ice cube effect is finally gone.

  2. Hey Tom,

Actually some of our bigger bugs gets going right away in April (Dark Hendricksons #12-14) and then some caddis will follow . Our sulphur hatch is pretty prolific in June if the weather isn’t too rainy to the point of the hatch getting washed out.

After that it’s tricos (#20-24) in mid July and hopefully sme terrestrials (hoppers, crickets, and ants) soon after.

The ice cube efffect will be in play for at least ten days to two weeks here after the recent barrage of snow (there’s a snowfall map on the main page of my home page if anyone wants to see what kind of snow we got hit with on Friday).

I’m ready for some decent spring like weather sooner than later.

    Take care,
    D.A.

  3. WOW!
Hendricksons don’t show until late April-early May around here. TRICOS in JUNE!! We get em late Aug-Sept.

We do get great Hexigenia hatches in late June-July.
