Since 1976 I’ve been keeping an angling diary. On Rock river below Kosh the walleye spawning peak has been within 48 hrs. of April 1st every year but two since this time.Looks like we’re right on schedule this year. Since the Rock is such a small river, there is only room for a boat or two in any “community hole”–don’t be afraid to think outside the box!
Check out any drainage tube entry, creek entry, scour hole around a snag, scour hole at a boat ramp (oh, baby!) besides the obvious slack water/fast water interface over rocky rubble bottom.
I like pitching 1/8 ounce black or gold jigheads with a yellow or purple Lindy munchie tail when water is clear like it has been lately and the pool levels are normal.
The old jig-n-minnow will work. But if a cold front isn’t dominating the bite there is much to be said for the new plastics AND THE OLD BUCKTAIL. Hutch makes some phenomenal hair jigs!
On Monday i ventured up into the Pecatonica river in the Flatlands and had a MONSTER just clobber the jig-n-plastic. If this fish were a walleye instead of a carp, the critter would certainly be playing a harp!
This is my last post before reporting to the Bass Pro shop at Gurnee for three days of meet-and-greet. Hope y’all beat ’em up out there this weekend !
I plan on it Ted. Thanks for spilling your guts.
Heading to the Rock as we speak, just before the front, hmm
. Have a great time at Bass Pro, wish I could join you but the Rock is calling.
have fun in the snow, Bucko! At least today it won’t be bad inside Bass Pro. When I get back we should fish Illinois River. Showed Falling Rock a couple of spots yesterday. he’s in that MWC tourney this weekend. See ya soon
Jeff I picked up your response to Ted on the Rock, and I assume your referencing below Kosh.,or on Kosh. I have never fished it, but I have been giving it thought this year since I have the time in my retirement. I’m from Monroe, Wi. and would you have a suggestion for boat launches.
Welcome aboard Jim, right now most anglers are launching downtown Fort, no fee and fishing around 106 bridge. Others are launching at Blackhawk Island at Riverfront Bar, fee $4.00. Today I did see one boat launch at 26 bypass so the ice must be out. No fee and no dock as of now, dock should be in a couple of weeks. Still lots of ice coming down river so you have to be careful. The bite was hot for the last three days but shut down today. Jim if you need directions just PM me and I’ll be glad to help. Like I said Jim welcome, IDA is the greatest site

Fishing was slow yesterday but I did get one nice sauger. Caught it on a 3/8oz pink/white Zone-R with small fathead in 14 fow vertical jigging. I guess I wasn’t jigging the rod, just holded it close to the bottom. Water temp 34.
