Munchied-eyes on Fox River

Cookie cutter walleyes about 3-4 pounds are stacked between Fish Refuge and Voyageur park below the DePere dam, waiting for the big fat girls to show up for the dance.Water temps are very cold, so jigging in place is the way to hook up w/ 1/4 oz jighead and 3″ Lindy munchie tail in chartreuse/purple.

Kyle Allen, Josh Copeland and I boated 40-50 here Tuesday in just a few hours, fighting brutal wind chill coming off of 35 degree water. The key was anchoring up and casting directly downstream. Cross-current and upstream casting produced more snags than fish..and the bait was moving too fast. Sometimes moving just a few feet made an incredible difference…and after stinging a dozen or so you had to move again. We also caught a few fish jigging blades in deeper water out from Voyaguer Park.

The key is s-l-o-w. Best way to accomplish this without being perpetually hung up is ANCHORING UP casting DIRECTLY DOWN CURRENT
and working the jig in place until these beautiful 22-23 inchers CRUSHED the jig.
Only about 15 boats were out there Tuesday afternoon because of the brutal weather…but the fish are here and willing if you shake it in their face!

  1. Thanks for the report Ted. I was over on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. We did good on Monday. We got some nicer fish down towards Fox Point. We ventured up by Voyager for a while to see if any bigger fish were being caught. The number were good, but we didn’t find the ones we were looking for.

We had some time on Tuesday morning before we had to head back to MN. We fished some areas from the mouth up to the railroad bridges hoping to find some concentrations of bigger fish. We mustered up four fish before we decided to hit the road. Some precipitation and warmer weather will help bring some more fish up.

  2. Great report. I am having my first experience fishing on the Fox, and it is great. Fishing with a couple of buddies on Monday afternoon and Tuesday Morning, we boated around 150 fish with only a couple hours of fishing each day. I have my best success vertical jigging ringworms about 400 yards down from the dam on the east side of the river closest to the park. Cannot wait to find even more monster Fox Eyes.
