Late ice farm ponds,Feb 20,2005

I keep thinking that the boys and I are going to take a break and not get out on the ice for a week-end.But after getting all the things that needed to be done and Cole wanting to get out I gave in once again.Cole didn’t fish last week-end with us because he was in Omaha for a church deal,so he was ready to fish.

We checked Dog Creek first but there was alot of water on the ice so we went to a farm pond to see how it looked. It was in much better shape with a good 6-8"’s of ice and very little water on top.The fish were on a good bite and we had action from the time we got started. The gills were hitting much better than the perch.

Cole and I packed light for the outting. We took the 6" hang auger, vex,a few buckets, bait, and a couple of rods. The one important thing we forgot was a shack. The wind came up and it was just to cold to fish in comfort. Here is Cole with a perch.

We only lasted about a hour but the fish were on a positive bite.We caught gills, perch, and bass.We both had Hali’s tipped with waxworms.I wish we would have brought a shack.I hope the ice holds out for a few more weeks to get back on these fish.I’m testing a new UL Abu Garcia spinning reel and I was very happy with it.Myself with another gill.

Best of luck to all those still on the ice.

  1. Ryan,

Great report, I know there are a lot of diehard ice fisherman out there and you want to extend the season. However, I wish our ice is as thin as yours is!

  2. good report ryan.i fished chip’s tourny today got my limit of walleyes, took 2nd and third.19,18,and 16 inchers.hope the ice holds around here for another week.

  3. Ryan great to see you getting out with the kids yet. Thanks for all the great reports on ice fishing. You sure did have your share. I only wish I could have made it out. Only got out once this year and that ways at the IDA GTG . The river is starting to open up around here so it wouldn’t be long and I’ll be back in action Jackson .

    Take care

  4. Hey Ryan, thanks for the report!!

Little B and I did the farm pond thing in our part of IA. on Fri.
We found the ice on Fri about 6 inches thick most places. I would have my doubts today. Caution will be the word from here on to open water. Here a couple of pics from Fri.

  5. That particular farm pond is owned by an old friend of ours, we’ve been fishing it for years. It’s not too tough to get permission to most of the ponds in our area, seems like a fresh pheasant and a 12 pack will get you into quite a few places!

  6. Ryan – glad to see you and the boys are still getting out – did some open water fishing Monday and caught some – I released a 5.5 pounder so nice fish at least – we had 4-5 keepers and about that many throw backs – most too small. Hope your fishing stays good – our ice is about shot. Chuckles
