Mille Lacs Lake Report 2-19-05

This past Saturday Hunters Point Resort held their 8th annual perch and elpout contest. The winning perch weighed in at 1.48 lbs with 2nd and 3rd. coming in at 1.45 tied. The second place winner was a friend of mine Travis Rosenbaum of St.Michael, Mn shown in middle of photo. The perch bite has been good out on the edges of the mud flats. With reports of many anglers catching jumbo perch.

Many fisherman I visited with after weigh-in talked of catching many small perch. The experience I have had with the perch have been many perch falling into the 7-8 inch range. These fish are going to be our jumbos very soon! Next ice season we should have a banner perch season.

Friday I spent fishing with a friend Jeff Schiburr. Jeff and I had a great day with our biggest jumbo coming in at 1.3 lbs. We managed enough to have a nice meal Friday evening. We fished the edges of two different flats Friday. The fishing slowed up at around 10am so we decieded to make a move to another spot that George Nitti from Hunter Point said was hot the day prior. The move provided to be a good one as Jeff caught a dandy 23 inch walleye that really had Jeff excited while he caught it on an Avid St.Croix jigging rod! Jeff was so excited I thought he might have had a ten pounder on….our 1.3lb jumbo also came off this flat. Flats that have been producing some nice fish have been the Boot flat, Center Bar, Fishers and Blue Jug. Hunters has good roads to all these flats. Hunters also has rental houses out in these areas and will be still avilable this coming weekend.

Saturday was a nice sunny day for the most part. The clouds came in late in the afternoon and had the temperature go with it. We had a few big winners from our group also! Leroy Carl won a shot gun and Has (Erik Haslund)won a 32 inch TV. I on the other hand enjoyed the good company and great brats I cooked for lunch! We caught our perch jigging weasels with just the head of a minnow. We also had some luck jigging with wax worms. If you plan on making the trip to Mille Lacs plan on bring both with you. Make plans for the 22nd Annual Liberty Beach Perch Extravaganza this Saturday. It’s perch pounding time on Mille Lacs make plans and we will see you next weekend!

  1. Thanks John, I heard reports about some big pout in the weigh-in area…….I just got caught up in the excitment of Travis taking second place…….for got to look into the pout weights!

  2. Great report Bobber! You’re right the contest was a blast, as always, George puts on a great event.

Unfortunately, our group of six didn’t win any cool prizes, but we still had a lot of fun and caught some nice jumbos! We started at about 7:30 and the bite was steady all day. We worked primarily south of the blue jug in 25 to 31 feet of water with the greatest success in 29-31. Like Bob, we primarily used JB Weasles and Mini Weasles tipped with minnow heads on the jiggin rods and smallish fatheads on plain red hooks on the bobbered rods.

For lunch we made some sloppy joes and beans (always need beans in the portables)… …since we had some left over, one member of our group who was having a rough day tipped a mini weasle with 2 J&B Original flavor baked beans. It wasn’t long and he had his first jumbo of the day. Just goes to show you what digging deep into your bag of tricks can do!

Here’s a 1.1 that my friend “Kody the Hawg-Dawg” is showing off.

  3. Bobber, Ashley and I had a great time this weekend. Those brats you made were awesome!!!! We did have a lucky weekend with regards to wining that big 32″ colored t.v.. WHICH IS FOR SALE,IN THE CLASSIFIED SECTION OF IDA!!!!
Sunday found the fishing to be much better than Saturday for us. Mainly due to the lack of people and the storm that was upon us. With heavy snow, visibility was only half a mile at times, which makes it tough finding your shack 7 miles out . We caught all the jumbos on Sunday with lime green swedish pimples and a minnow head. We also tipped the swedish pimples with the white ratso tails, made by custom jigs and spin.
All in all, it was a great weekend of fishing. It’s always nice to meet fellow IDA members and have a few cold ones. Here’s to a great weekend guys.

  4. Congrats Erik on the TV, and to LeRoy Carl for winning the Stoger single shot 20 ga.! We didn’t even know we had winners in the group until the next morning when we went into Hunters to eat breakfast! After scouring my pictures, I found out why! Tim Hukreide was sharing his years of fishing wisdom with everyone within earshot, drowning out the reading of the winning buttons!

  5. From the look on my son Ben’s face, you can easily tell his BS meter was max’d out!
What a great time though! Hook, thanks for the place to crash! Bob, the brats were awesome! LeRoy, I have the patch material for the hole you burned through your shack trying to thaw the zipper! I would have done it a little differently! We are really looking forward to Liberty next weekend!

  6. That last pic is of a bunch of old grizzlie fisherman. It’s always fun at these events to see the guy’s we compete against all summer in tourneys.
You learn a heck of a lot more at these events than you do in the summer. People tend to forget how long of memories some people have.

I could tell Ben had a good time, he fell asleep in the recliner just before I did saturday evening! LOL
A whole week to rest up before starting all over again Friday night!

Big D stopped by yesterday and said he was bringing the brats for saturday.
Forecast so far for the weekend looks good.

  9. Got my dealer’s visor ready and read up on the plays! Going to be a fun time! Now….since you guys haven’t shown me you can weigh any fish at these , I will win a raffle prize to show you all up!
