Iowa Ponds

Took the day off Friday and did a bit of Ice Fishing with friends Aaron and Bill. First picture is Aaron studying the LX-3 trying to get the big gills to take his offering.

Here’s Bill looking rather comfortable enjoying the day.

Ended up cleaning 25 of these very nice gills. The bigger ones were 9″. We caught a number of bass but the crappies eluded us this day. Had a great time on the ice with friends.

  1. Thanks for the report. Looks like a nice sunny day. You can keep all that snow you have ”down south.” What did you catch the fish on? Any colors better than others?
    Thanks, Bill

  2. them are some serious slabs Zamer

How deep was it where you guys were fishing ? Looks like there might have been some fallin trees you were fishing in ?

What was the jig of choice for the day ? Do you use live bait or the plastic wedgies ?

    Man i wish i was fishin !!

  3. We were using tear drops in glow and chartruese with a waxie. Depth was 12-14′. In the morning the fish were pretty active and easy to catch. As the morning wore on it took us a while to figure out what they wanted differently. The fish had moved off bottom to about 3 feet off bottom. We would drop the jig to bottom, raise it up to where the fish were and then lower it very slowly. The gills would follow it down and hit it as it was falling. Pretty cool to watch on the LX-3.

  4. Actually it is a pond at a summer camp for at risk children. A wonderful place, about 5 acres of pond and 400 acres of timber.
