Pool 4 Mississippi River Walleye and Sauger Report

I had the pleasure to share my boat with Brad Laabs this weekend. We fished Redwing area, for the weekend.

What a difference in Days..Saturday was like summer and Sunday was like a fall duck hunt.

You have to Love Minnesota..

I have to say I don’t think the fish are hammering anything to heavy.

We caught around 20 fish on Saturday 20 inches was our biggest.

Sunday we fished a half day and got five walleyes 19 inches was our biggest. Read on and I will tell you what we did.

Saturday we started out about 7:30 am. For those whom know me I keep my boat in my heated living room. It is nice but it has its draw backs.

When we trailer up to redwing all my shifting and steering cables became frosted from the heat change…Well we had to mess around on the ramp for quite some time.

Finally we were off..Decided to start at the dam.

We pitched some bucktails and ringworms to no avail.

went to vertical popping jigs.

The bit for us was not hot and heavy but you would pick up a fish every couple of drifts.

Photo of one of our best baits.

We also dragged some ringworms..That produced half of our fish. We could not find a really big fish bait most our fish were 15 to 17 inches with a few sixers for fun.

Our biggest on Saturday was 20 inches and on Sunday was 19 inches.

Here is Brad with a couple of our eaters. We kept six on Saturday.

Sunday was like a whole new world.

We arrived at the ramp at 7:00 am and I think the wind was already gusting over 15 MPH..

So we went to the dam to get vertical.. heck who changed the rules..could only catch 2 popping assasins.

So we switch to bucktails and minnows and pitched to some sand areas.

Then the rain started about 11:00 Brad had a four hour trip ahead of him so we packed it in. Finished the day with five walleyes 19 inches was the biggest.

Here is another picture.

Hope to see you out there play safe.

  1. Good seeing you on the water today Vandy . The rain was harmless at first but after about 2 hours it didn’t appear it was going to show mercy .

  2. Thanks for the report. AND Thanks for the pic of the jon boat out there-rub it in. lol. Thought about doing the river thing in the jon boat this weekend but chickened out as I didn’t want to take the chance of having Van problems towing a boat. The problem isn’t fixed yet my feelings were and it turned out they weren’t. Mike [Bigdad] will check it out tomorrow and hopefully that will end my problems and fears. Nice to see the sunbather back down here fishing. Must not be any open water up north huh?!!! Thats what he gets for moving way up there. The best fishing is way down here on the Mississippi River.
    Thanks, Bill

  3. Yea Chris everyone is so jealous when they see me in my Rabbit hat…..
Say Bill you missed out on Saturday it was a fantastic day.
I almost started a bikini watch. But than Dustin jinxed the day on Sunday and brought a rain storm..So the bikini’s will have to wait for a later date.

  4. Nice report Vandy…Looks like your still wearing the same Alaskan outfit you had on back in November! Gotta love the nort country!

  5. Hey Tom I was thinking that hat makes me look like a male model ..
But for all you jealous one’s out there here is another photo with a different hat.

Heck you guys. maybe it isn’t the hat.

Does any one now a good beautician.
Ahh heck I suppose I need to hire a stand in..there goes my profit margin for 2005..

  6. We also got out Saturday and Sunday morning. Quality, not quanity was our end result. On Saturday, a few walleye under the slot and many sauger; our largest was 21″. Sunday we left when it started to rain. A few sauger and one 18″ walleye. All but two Wall/Saug were male. I expected the reverse.

  7. Hey Doc
It was a great day Saturday..no wind nice and sunny.
I thought the bite was slow but if you stayed with it you could get a limit.
Sunday you really had to be on your toes cause the wind made the game alot more in the fishes favor.
What was your best presentation? What rig are you running?
Hope to see you next time.

  8. I am in a blue Lowe with 50 HSP Merc. Sunday you would have seen me with a yellow lab in the boat. My favorite presentation on the river? Good question. A three-way seems to have higher success than the jig this year. My blue ring tails haven’t yeilded a fish, nor have my Yakomotos. I am big plastic & plug guy when not on the river. — Docster
