2/3 Winter Fly Fishing Report

I finally had a chance to get out and get some fly fishing in during the early winter catch and release season. Temperatures peaked out it in the high 40’s yesterday, so it was an easy choice to be fishing rather than working.

I met a pal and we hit the Middle Branch of the Whitewater in the morning hours from 9:00-12:00. Temperatures were just above freezing when we started and we very comfortbale later on. We both fished a scud for starters, and I used a midge trialer most of the day (black midge larvae, zebra midge, and a floating midge).

Since water temperatures were very low early on, the fish were sluggish and were very interested in taking the scud. Later, as temperatures increased and more midges began to appear on the banks, hovering above the water, and flying around in general, more trout took the trial fly.

I skipped over to the South Branch of the Whitewater for an hour. I was doing more scouting and fihsing than just hard core fishing. I moved quickly and stuck to the same scud/midge set up. Fishing in just a long sleeved t-shirt in the afternoon was certainly a refreshing respite from the usual winter weather.
