Red Cedar River, WI.

January thaw, be it on ice or open water- it’s great to be outdoors. I always like hitting the "Cedar" this time of year. Keeps me tuned up for the big river and gets me ready for the upcoming tournament season.

Last Friday we spent a good portion of the afternoon ice breaking. That and the warm weather has the upper section of the river cleared.

The mid range depths are producing right now. Look for the second main drop behind the riffles. There is not alot of current now so the fish are scattered at those depths.

Both plasctics and livebait rigs are producing fish. For plastics, the Doo’s have been the best choice. The two colors in the first photo have been the hottest.

Eyes were our main objective today but we were pleased with the bonus perch that whacked the Doo’s. Any type of structure change seemed to hold the perch.

Livebait is producing also but the fish are real shy about taking the bait. Well the eyes and perch anyway. Our last fish of the day was not shy at all. (bottom photo)

A great week to get out and get a plastic bite going. See you on the water, Don

  1. Thanks for the report Don. Open water, gotta love it. These nice temps we have been having lately sure give a guy the urge to get out on the water. Nice fish and a big bonus fish too.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Those are sure some nice looking eaters. How is that jet boat working out for you by the way? Did the pike attack the doo or did he hit a minnow? I may have to stop out to the Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire this weekend as I see the boat show is there. It would be a great chance to check out all the new boats and shoot a little bull. OK maybe a lot of bull. Steve

  3. thanks for the support guys. Steve, the Jet is working out great, need to add a few accessories to it before spring. Yep, make sure you and Jackie stop out at the show, I have a perfect boat for ya!
