Do to some camera issues and bad timing our reports have been a little poor so far this year, but, WE ARE BACK! I spent the evening on the ice doing some scounting while Adam had some guide clients. We were all working a similar shallow flat. It took me about 20 minutes of fishing to hook into this 27 inch HOG. We have been calling them HOGS this year because if they got any fatter they would explode.
A combination of Glow Devil Jigging Spoons and Tip-ups was the winning ticket for the night. Using the MarCum OVS 560 we were able to watch several baits at one time. While we didn’t see a lot of these big fish, the ones we saw, bit. This is a good thing for this time of year, as normally it takes a lot of coaxing. The next picture is Adam with a fat 26 incher.
Adams guide clients also had pretty good luck, landing a nice pike and 3 walleye between 24-26 inches. The next picture is one of the 24 inchers they got. All the fish this year have been very healty and as mentioned earlier, very fat.
Like always, the action is not fast and furious, because we are fishing for trophy fish. But, any evening you can catch 7 fish over 23 inches, it is a good night. This last picture is a fat 26 Tom and I jigged up using my MarCum LX-3. Using a good flasher is key, as you need to be able to tell between all the perch what is going on down there. And, there are A LOT of perch!
Awesome fish Scott! You know have got me all reved up! Great reort and pics! The only thing is, I will not be able to hit the hard water until after mid January .
Scott,
What are you suing for terminal tackle on the tip-ups.
Any glow jigs? What size shiners? thanks
thanks Coffee
Hey Scott / Adam nice fish!!
You really must have them zeroed in.
a little bigger than the fish I’ve been putting on the ice lately!!!!!!
Scott,
The report and those pics are Freakin Fantastic, now I have something else to dream about. Keep up the good work
dave
We use a jig from Scenic Tackle called a Jig-o-Bit. They have an oversized hook on them and come in various glow colors. You can’t go wrong on Mille Lacs with Glow. We have various other set-ups that work but the Jig-O-Bit/Tip-up combo always seems to be a producer.
There is nothing better than watching a 8lb walleye inhale a shiner on camera. I will get the footage on tape this year yet. That OVS 560 camera is unbelievable. You will not believe how good the lighting system works until you see it. I have a TV/VCR combo set-up in my vehicle this year. I should be able to get some sweet footage
Can we post footage on IDA??? It would be cool to get some hot action on tape and put it up here.
Scott, those are was awesome eyes dude!!! Hell were lucky to get one eye through the ice like that down my way.You guys do it on a regular basis.Tells you about the caliber of anglers you and Adam are.
How big are the perch you are seeing?Lots of jumbo’s?
Ryan Hale
The area we are fishing does not produce Jumbo’s, never has. Just a winter staging area for little perch. But, we do have a couple areas that are producing eater walleye and some huge 12-13 inch jumbos. The perch fishing is not fast either, but the size makes up for the pace. We don’t guide perch trips until later in the year, because we are usually busy chasing trophy walleye.
Nice report and fish Bud. Sounds like you have them dialed in pretty good.
Thanks, Bill
Scott and Adam,
great trip and pictures. would be nice to see some video this year of some underwater action. would also be a good teaching tool. Jack..
