Red Lake SLABS-1/2/05

I decided to use ths past weekend to do a scouting mission. So, instead of my normal trip to the Big Pond I headed up to Red Lake on Saturday, only to be greeted by near blizzard conditions (note to self-Check Weather before you leave home). Well, despite the weather we were greeted with fantastic fishing-typical of Red Lake. Unfortuately with the conditions taking pictures was not an option so I snapped one when we got back home. Here are two 14 3/4 inch slabs, both going 2.2 pounds.

I was joined on this last minute scouting trip by Tom Faber, a friend of mine from home and we met my good friend Joel-“Ninetoe” on the lake. Joel was set up out of Hillmans and in an area that had been producing fish. We arrived at Joel’s house at about 2:30 and after getting set up we soon figured out there wasn’t much moving.

So, off I went in search of the school that we knew was nearby. Sure enough, about 20 ft away to be exact. Well, it took me about 20 minutes to catch a limit in those blizzard conditions. We then set up the portable house and so everyone could get in on the action. We all caught our fill of slabs and decided to go visit other friends on the lake by 4:30.

We made our rounds visiting people we knew on the lake. Everyone seemed to be getting some fish during the day and agreed this is the best bite there has been in many years. There is nothing better than a day bite on Red. We ended up staying up on Red for the night because of the 8-10 inches of new snow (perfect for the snowmobilers) On Sunday we headed back to Mille Lacs but opted for some good old bluegill fishing on a nearby lake, which was a lot of fun and the fish cooperated! I chock it up as another great trip to Red!

  1. Great report…guess we should have been on Red and not LOW.
We struggled to catch the 13 we kept. We threw back a few little guys too but overall…it was SLOW for us.

  2. Scott, we didnt do as good this weekend, we did end up with 12 crappies on sat. We were out of Hillmans about 3.5 miles.

  3. Wow!!! Sounds like you guys really got into a nice bunch of fish. Just goes to show that the fish will bite no matter what the conditions are above the ice. Care to share your method of searching for the crappies when they moved with everyone? Thanks for the report Bud.
    Thanks, Bill
