Mississippi River Pool 10 Ice Report 12/31/04

Gills and crappies still have been on the slow side as far as the bite goes…I have been hitting the usual haunts and also several other places not so public and the bite remains the same…

Some pretty nice gills in the 7-8″ range are still coming thru the hole, just not fast and furious…I have been running two pulsator rods in the same hole. One pole I have a rocker or a moon glitter tipped with a spike or two with in 8″ off the bottom. The second rod I use a rock-a-roo or a Lil Mic probing the area a foot or two below the ice…This has added more fish to my daily catch.

The crappie population has kept the bite real fun too. No real big monsters at all but 10-12″ fish are still taking my offering. The Lil Mic’s and Rock-a-roos have been the best go to bait for the silver slabs…I have been getting a lot of my ice tackle at Hamann’s Varity Store, downtown Prairie du Chien. In the back they have a nice selection of ice tackle and bait. Here we have a nice crappie Ted Peck caught on a Lil Mic.

Check out the bucket Ted is resting on. This is not just an ordinary bucket. Ted has taken a plastic bucket with a snap tight lid and tied about 30′ of rope to it’s handle so not it doubles and a safety device as well as everything else you use your bucket for….good thinking Ted

I’m still picking up some nice perch too. You can really tell when the perch hit your jig…They CRUSH it with a vengeance…BAM….

Here is one I caught that measured over 11″ long….On my rod the marks start at 8″ and each mark after it is one more inch…Starting at the handle of the rod…After this pic she went right back down the hole….can you imagine how many eggs she will drop in the spring

Well that’s all for now
Be safe and good fishing

  1. Dave, your running 2 poles out of the same hole? Don’t you have problem with the gills turning in circles tangling everything up? Hell this happenes to us a few feet apart at times.

Save a few of those panfish for the IDA get together please.

  2. Just got a pulsator rod. Would appreciate any modification tips you have. Looks like icing will be a major problem. Already tossed the spring bobber and put 2 lb mccoy line on it. It has a franzen spring bobber on it now. Plenty of time to tinker at 60 degree weather we are having in cent. il.

  3. Awesome report I best be looking for my river tackle you are deffinetly giving me the urge to go east

  4. I’ve used that rope wrapped around the bucket TWICE over the past few years to pull out folks who have fallen thru. On a lighter note…dontcha just love it when the sound of fins slapping the ice goads you’re buddies into asking what you’re using? This is exactly what happened with ol’ Koonce and his buddy Andy when we were fishing Green Lake on Pool 9 on Friday….
    Dave: whatcha usin’??
    Ted : a purple Henway.
    Dave: what’s a Henway??
Ted : about three pounds !
    Dave : Expletive deleted.

Obviously Dave was too busy considering major business deals with B-Fish-N Tackle Co. to be on guard. Please partronize Dave’s business ventures! If you’re coming to the IDA outing on the 29th from the West cross at the Lansing bridge . Dave STOLE this real estate for just $700 and will be putting up a toll booth in an Otter tent here in the near future !!
