Lake Independence, Mn 12-27-04 walleyes

Just a quick note on Indy. Today I made another run out to dial in the walleyes out there. So far its been the small fish story. I only managed to ice 2 small eyes tonight and both came on a fathead with a pink glow jig under a bobber. They just didn’t seem very aggressive. I set up in 30′ but checked deeper and shallower with not much to show for it. I’ve fished weeds, rocks and mud with nearly the same results. With talking to a couple locals I hear they are seeing a good bite in the middle of the night. While I like my Otters, I don’t plan to try sleeping in one anytime soon.

The ice was 11" with almost no snow. There were small trucks driving on the lake, but I’ll stick to the ATV.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. Went out again tonite for a while and did much better. 22′ was the depth I caught them. Total I ended up with 7 walleyes and saw many others caught. They still ran a little on the small side, but they were very aggressive today. Orange glow/brass jigging spoons caught most of the fish. If you marked one, you usually caught it. 3:30-4:30 was the best time.

  2. We went out this morning and were fishing by 7 AM in 20′ of water. Only 4 eyes in a 3 hour window, so our thoughts are that we need to stick to the evening bite. All were small fish and went right back. The future looks good. That ice was making more noise than I can ever remember. Good thing the snowmobile was the method of transport. I am sure we would have been alright driving, but you never know. Especially with this winter.
