Sunday I took the family out for a little crappie fishing. We started fishing shallow in 8′-10′ with some decent success on a mix of crappie, perch and sunfish. There was around 12" of ice. However, once more people started showing up and the noise levels increased, the fishing fell off quickly. That’s when I went on the hunt in some of my deeper water locations looking for suspended fish. It took a lot of hole drilling, but I finally managed to find a nice school of crappies holding 20′ down over 40′ of water. The ice out here was in the 8"-10" range. We made the move and managed to ice quite a few crappies. The size wasn’t the greatest, but there were enough big fish to make a good meal that night.
The fish bit both on a silver Swedish Pimple as well as on a small glow jig under a bobber with a minnow. We even caught a walleye about a foot off the bottom. If you can get out during the week, I would still look shallow first as I think there are many more nice fish there right now. Give it a couple 3 weeks and the fish should start moving more to their deep haunts. Good luck!!
Thanks for the report Mike! Hopefully I can get up there later this week on south or north center.
