Lake Wisconsin, December 4th and 5th

We are beginning to see more walleyes staging in the deeper areas along with the saugers as the water continues to get colder. Currently, surface water temperatures are running right around 36 degrees in main lake areas.

Larry Wilkinson, long time friend and High School class mate joined me in the hunt for walleyes and saugers this weekend. Here’s a shot of a nice 20-1/4" sauger he caught on Saturday morning.

Shortly after catching that fish, he hooked into and landed a slightly bigger one. He was measuring this nice sauger as I went for the camera. It was only a second or two later and from behind me I heard, "ker-splash". I’ll tell you what, Larry doesn’t waste any time with his release’s. Guess he was in a hurry to get back to fishin! As a result, I don’t have a picture of the the only other 20" plus fish caught this weekend.

One of the strange things I’ve noticed here on Lake Wisconsin, is that when the wind blows from the south, the fishing is usually average to poor.

On Saturday morning, it blew from the South at about 10-20mph. Fishing was average. Not bad, but not great either.

We ended up with two saugers over 20" and two others betweend 17-18". Plus several more shorties.

On Sunday morning, we were greeted by winds from the East at about 15-20mph. Most people would think the fishing was going to be poor this morning.

You know the old saying, (Winds from the East, Fish bite least). Don’t believe it when fishing on Lake Wisconsin.

I have had many a good fishing day up here when the wind blew from the east and Sunday was another one of those days.

It did take a us and hour or two in the early morning to figure out a pattern. The one that ended up working best was to keep changing jig colors. And the fishing certainly wasn’t fast and furious. But it was steady and by 1:30 in the afternoon, we had a nice two man limit of walleyes and saugers.

Jigs and minnows proved better than live bait or plastics again today.

This last picture is the limit of eaters Larry and I caught in those strong East winds.

Good luck out there guys!

  1. Thanks guys!
Seems like the best fishing every year is between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as long as a guy can tolerate the wind and cold weather.
