Red Cedar River WI.

Early May was the last time I was on this stretch of river. It was like visiting an old friend! Being a shallow river, it gave me a good opportunity to give the river boat a workout. Good fishing can be found on the Red Cedar all year long but the cold water period is my favorite.

It is best to be prepped for multi-species action. Eyes and sauger are moving up river, a good population of pike- and good numbers of carp can make for some non-stop rod bending. For bait I usually have along fats and small sucker minnows, and the BIG THREE in plastics. Doo’s, ringworms, and the new paddletails from BfishN Tackle.

Our best producer today was ring worms. Although the bite was not real hot all our saugers and eyes came on darker colored ring worms. Both species were relating to downed timber.

The pike were flat going nuts though! Good numbers and some fair sized fish were tearing up both ringies and doo’s. Pitching jigs in slack water areas was the best method for taking pike. purple ringworms took the biggest fish while blue or white doo’s produced the numbers.

Pitching paddletails or doo’s on the flats was taking some fine carp and buffalo. (I will be doing a carp outing soon!)

We were getting fish on almost every cast, hard to beat the fighting spirit of a carp, and they are a blast on plastic.

See you on the water, Don

  1. Nice to see you out on the local waters again Don. I feel bad I haven’t been on the Chipp or Red Cedar this fall. I have heard the pike bite is good on the Chipp down here by Durand too. I’m gonna try to do some bank fishing here Friday and Saturday on the Red Cedar…It’s supposed to be nice.

  2. You should have a blast, they are tearing up the plastics! Give the new paddletails a try, they are working well. My best color has been the purple.
Do you do any fall or winter eye and sauger fishing on the Chippewa?

  3. Don,

How’s the jon boat working out for ya?
I am thinking of digging mine out for its mid-winter debut.
Sure is nice to have those jon boats for dumping over ice- shelfs or bumping ice or logs….I call mine my combat boat!

  4. Steve, it is working out well. The Red cedar has limited access and is real shallow. The jet drive makes it a lot quicker to get from point to point. I don’t need a rock spotter in the front of the boat anymore!

Don I havn’t done much this year. Hunting season and the weather have limited me. In fact my boat is ready to be covered and put away for the winter. I’m gonna just do a little bit of shore fishing….I’d love to hit it like I did last year. I did real good with the saugers and eyes last year and some real nice pike too.

Next year we’ll have to get together and do some fishing…

  6. Hey Don, yet to get that pic of the walleye in the mail but all in due time. Where are you at on the river in relation to the dam on menomimin,94 bridge above or Sanna dairy below,or farther down yet? Hard to tell by those pics but is that a northern pike double? Great report! MIKE
