Iowa Great Lakes report,Oct 24,2004

With a warm sunny day on forecast the boys and I loaded the boat and off to Spirit Lake to start our day on the water. We also had Tucker and the Benelli along incase any waterfowl offered a passing shot.We anchored on a shallow rock reef that dropped off on both sides.Cole and I were casting 1/8 oz. Fireball jigs tipped with a minnow.Austin had a slip-bobber set up and was casting it all along the reef.Within the first few casts I had a big fish on and it ended up being a muskie that got off at the side of the boat.He gave us all a good look but it was not our day to boat this fine fish. Here is a nice smallie that we boated.

The wind came up and if you’ve ever been on Spirit with strong winds you know how rough it can be.We did pull bouncer/spinner and did some live bait rigging with limited action before we pulled up and took off to East.We started pulling cranks with mono/boards and leadcore out the back of the boat. Here is Cole with a little white bass.

The white bass were on a good crankbiat bite and we boated several nice fish. They are a very fun fish to catch. The boys have come along way on working the boards and choosing different colors and styles of cranks. Here is a nice 2# fish that came on a DT #10.

After a few hours of catching these white bass we decided to run over to West and try to find a few perch.Austin caught a nice 10" perch right away but after that it was very slow. The perch were biting very light for us and we missed more that we caught.

It was a great day on the water. How many times can you say you caught fish on 3 different bodies of water using all of these methods?Slip-bobber,casting jigs/bait,Lindy rigging,bouncer/spinners,vertical jigging, and on carnkbaits.

I did notice alot of search amd rescue workers on West while we were fishing. It turned out to be terrible news as a dock lift boat went down on Saturday afternoon and a man and a 12 year old child are still missing as I write this. The boat was found today in 60′ of water off of Gull Point.

Don’t put your boats away just yet Iowa anglers. There are plenty of options on the IGL’s.Here is Austin with a 1#2oz.white bass that was caught on a clown husky jerk.
