Tainter Lake WI. Report

The jig bite remains steady and should only get better. Vertical jigging hair jigs and deadstickng Phelps floaters is putting plenty of eyes in the boat. The downside is you have to sort through numbers of short fish. The best locations for me has been breaks off the main channel. The eyes can be found in Depths ranging from 6 to 26 ft. Dark color jigs are working the best. Hair jigs tipped with big fatheads or black jigheads with plastic are working best. The keeper size eyes I am getting are running in the 16 to 17 inch range. The pictures did not turn out very good but it will give you an idea.

The panfish bite was slower today but I did not target them as hard as the other day. I did pick up a few crappies like the pictured in 16ft of water close to structure. Again sorry about the terrible quality of the photos. I have been using big minnows on 3/8 ounce jigs. The eyes, perch and crappies seem to prefer a big profile-so don’t be afraid to use big baits.

The keeper eyes I caught were coughing up sucker sized minnows! Schmidty has good sized fats and sucker minnows, I would have both along. If you are targeting perch, crawlers are also a good option.

The action is pretty much non-stop so it will be a good weekend to take a kid fishing. Enjoy and I will see you on the water, Don

  1. Mike, the pattern is still holding although it was a little slower today. I think the weather had an effect today. Fish the steep breaks off the main current for eyes and look for wood or other structure for crappies and perch. Good luck, Don.
