East Okoboji report,Oct 16 2004

I’ve been waiting for the cooler temps to hit NW Ia to drop the water temps and get the fish in a positive feeding mode. But this morning was a little to cold on Spirit Lake.Cole and I started on Spirit but with 30 mph winds out of the NW and 25 degree temps we froze on the water.I guess we were the dumb ones as when we got to the boat ramp we were the only boat there. We tried for a few hours but decided to fish East Okoboji to get out of the wind a little bit.We found a drop off with rocks that we jigged with minnows and fireball 1/8 oz. jigs.It wasn’t long and we found out what was in the area-white bass. This one was 1# 11 oz.

Although white bass are a blast to catch Cole and I wanted to find some walleyes or perch. There are some very nice perch on East if you can find them and there active.Today was not our day for perch though. Here is Cole with a white bass.

We finally found some active walleye on a rock hump in 10′ of water. We anchored and vertical jigged minnows and they bit very well for us for a few hours.Cole was using a 5′ UL Pro Series Lighting Rod and was having alot of fun fighting the fish, fun to watch also. Here is the typical size of the eyes we were on today.

At one time when we went to pull anchors up to move we had caught a huge bunch of weeds on the front anchor.Tucker, are male Golden, seen these weeds and lost it!!! In the water he goes and attacks the anchor and weeds. Finally he gets a bunch of weeds in his mouth and starts to do laps around the boat showing off. This is 2 weeks in a row he has gone in the water.I guess I need to get him out on some waterfowl as he must be telling us something.

It was a great day to be on the water.Cool air, good fishing, college football on the radio, harvest going on in the fields on the way home,I love the fall.

Best of luck on the water guys.

  1. Way to go Ryan, between the wind and cool temps , I left the boat in the garage today. However, if was in the Great lakes area I may have ventured out somewhere. Have great day and thanks for the report.

  2. A great day to spend the day-multi species fishing. I’m getting more and more excited in multispecies fishing it seems. Its so much fun and great with kids. Even bought some new St. Croix light action rods this year and boy are are they fun to fight fish on. Makes every fish feel big. You will have to talk Cole into letting you reel in a fish on his rod, you will love it. Thanks for the report. Always love to hear whats happening down there. Have to love the Okoboji/Spirit Lake area. Thanks, Bill
