Fridays Outing with Friends on the Rock River

Got out with friends this morning and afternoon to find the walleye and sauger are moving up river from Lake Koshkonong. In the morning it was rain and wind and more rain but that didn’t stop us. Check out the rest of my report to see how we caught nice walleyes and saugers like this one.

At 7:30AM my friend Steve Holbach and I met at the boat launch to chase for the might walleye and sauger. Steve hasn’t been fishing for a long time and all he wanted to do is catch a fish and that we did like this nice walleye Steve caught vertical jigging. It took awhile for Steve to get the hang of vertical jigging. He want to jig fast and high. When I finally got him to slow down and almost drag the jig and minnow comb he started to catch fish.

Steve and I caught some nice walleyes and saugers like this one I caught. Most of are fish came vertical jigging 3/8oz Zone-R’s in the red/black color. We caught some fish on a dead stick with 12" leader and gold hook and large fathead also but jigging was the best bite this day.

After dropping off Steve at the launch I met another friend at the launch a.k.a Z-Man as we know him here on IDA. Ed and I went to the same area where we caught fish in the 6 to 8 fow. Most fish were caught with a muddy bottom. We tried deep water with no results this day. Ed and I did manage to catch some fish for dinner like these that Ed is holding. Fishing will only get better anglers and the ringworm bite is still to come. When water temp get below 50 look out. Ringworms and Zone-R’s

Steve and Ed thanks for the great day on the water.

  1. I’m jealous Jeff! I haven’t been out for almost two weeks with bowhunters here etc…
I am hoping to get down to Pool 4 within a couple weeks!
    Nice report!

  2. Jeff..thanks for hosting the Friday outing….my turn next time. Didnt make it out on saturday, despite the anticipation of great action. With temps in the 40s and winds just about that high, played it smart (or wimpy) and staeyd home to get some outside work done…. but….will give it a crack some afternoon this week.
Tom…also planning on heading to Pool 4 in next couple weeks…tried to get Jeff to join me, but he’s too hooked on the Rock and hunting plans. I dont have that hunter/fisherman split personality, so it makes it easier to get my priorities straight

  3. Thanks Tom, I hope you get the 30 pointer. Are you in a zone that you have to shoot a doe first like me? I’ll be hunting soon. I like to hunt in the morning and fish in the after noon this works great for me.

  4. Thank You Ed, you know we’ll be out again soon. Oh by the way thanks again for the and sub sandwich

I forgot to mention we also saw are good buddy Derek a.k.a Diesel as we all know him on IDA. Derek I hope you caught a few, when we left you to get out of the pounding wind for a while and fish deeper water, zipoooo. Seems like the bite is shallow and turns off around 4:30. Good to see you again and don’t give up Derek one day you will hit a pot of gold.

PS. Boat control and position is key

  5. Hey All,

Well Jeff was right again. Got on the water about 2:30 and instantly picked up a short eye and one other bite and that was it. I wasn’t expecting too much action with front but but it is always better fishing than raking leaves. I too went for a wind break in deeper water with nothing to show for it as well. Left by 600.

Good to meet ya Z-man. See ya next time.

    D

  6. Yes boat control and position plays a big key in catching fish. Gotta love that red/black color Knuckle Ball jigs too both in the regular Knuckle Ball and Zone R’s. Thanks for the report. Sounds like you are having a blast over there by your reports. Thanks, Bill

  7. Thanks Bill, Yes the black/flo red is real hot here on the Rock River also pink/white has been hot. Fishing was very tough today after the cold front that move in here Saturday. I started off about 8:00AM and fished to NOON with a good friend Dale Helgeson from http://www.outdoor-experience.tv. Dale and I fished all the spots that I fished Friday with no results . With the fishing so slow Dale decided to go bow hunting so I dropped him off and I went to lunch and back out on the water. With the Packers game tied at 7 to 7 I thought for sure the Lions where going to kick some so I went fishing. Boy was I wrong, I think everyone was surprised when Packers won 38 to 10 . And I was surprised to find walleye in 4 to 6 fow up by the Bark River where it flows into the Rock. The warmer water was the key and the mud line. Mud line is where the muddy water connect with clearer water and thats where I caught walleyes like this. All and all it ended up be a good day.

  8. We fished that mud line at the Bark couple weeks ago, and thats where the white bass were in thick….but no eyes then…at least none that got to our bait before the white bass…..Jeff..you’re just an eye magnet…what else can I say.
