The transition period is upon us and the fish are stacking up in classic fall locations. The toughest thing today was deciding on what body of water to hit! I had been some time since I fished Tainter so that is where we headed. I must say I am pleased with our decision. A strong eye bite and some fine crappie and perch made for a fun filled day.
This week until Thurday I have been working the trolling pattern on Menomin. Fish are still being taken with this method but the water has been loaded with debris. Needless to say most of the time is spent cleaning grass and leaves off the cranks. Concentrating on weed edges is still producing pike and smallies. Glass shad in sizes 4 through 7 in perch color have been working the best. My field staff is still doing well throwing topwater and shallow cranks in shallow slop or rocks. The first picture is a bass taken off of rocks. The secind photo is H.D. and Charlie-HJI field staffers.
It felt good today to get a jig bite going and have it remain steady throughout. Our main concentration was on points close to the main river channel. We found the eyes in the 7 to 9ft range. Hair jigs tipped with leeches produced the best. We had to sort through many short fish before we would hit a keeper.
Mid afternoon we switched to flats that had some type of structer nearby. 14 to 16ft of water yielded some nice crappie and perch. The panfish preferred bulky jigs like Fuzzy grubs tipped with fatheads. A vertical- deadsticking method worked best. The fall action is getting hot, get out and enjoy the action. See you on the water, Don
Looks like fun Don!!!
How do you like the new boat, I assume that one will be for mostly winter fishing.
Yes, sounds like alot of fun. A day of multi-species fishing can make for some of the best days on the water. You get your eys to satisfy that craving and some good crappies and perch to filet if you love eating fish. A great way to spend the day-I’m jealous.
Thanks, Bill
Steve, I will also use it to run the shallow rivers. To tell you the truth I have not spent much time in it yet. The crew in the photo has been putting it through its paces.
You hit it right on the head Bill. It was great to have a jig bite going so strong! The perch and crappie tasted great last night.
