Lake Geneva Wisconsin – Crappie

Thousand-one, thousand-two, thousand-three… That’s been the majority of my vocabulary the past few days. You see, I’ve been chasing slab crappies on Lake Geneva. If you aren’t familiar with Geneva, it’s a 5,000-acre, very deep lake in southern Wisconsin. This first picture is from a late Friday afternoon bite. All three days, I was finding fish in anywhere from 15’-80’. Most were suspended, but some were on the bottom as well. The next picture is my father in-law with a couple dandies from Saturday morning. The tactics I deployed were to mainly cast plastics out past the break and start my count down. Sometimes I would go to a 50 count. Believe me, that takes patience. Then it was an extremely slow, steady retrieve back to the boat. As far as what I was using, I was throwing naked plastics from Lunker City. The 2.5” Fin S Fish, and the 1.75” Fin S Shad. I did have really good luck as well with Gitzit swordtails. I like to use a tube jig head on the Swordtails. It gives them a sleeker, more minnow-like profile. White or clear were the most productive colors on these outings. The last picture is from a very windy Sunday morning. As you can see, Saturday and Sunday were very nice days.

I like to use clear mono because the lake is gin clear, and I need to get good distances from my casts. To counter the stretch problems that can be present at those distances and depths, I use St. Croix Avid rods. I like the AS66LF models. The sensitivity of the Avid rods is phenomenal.
