After spending a week in Mud in-fested waters of pool 14-17 it sure felt good to get back on the home waters of pools 4 and 5. Don’t get me wrong there was some nice fish down in pools 14-17, but man what a mud hole. The water clarity down there was about 1-3”. I am so glad to be back and ready for fall fishing.
Most of you this time of year are either sitting in a duck blind or sitting in a tree waiting for that perfect shot. All I have to say is while you are doing that you are missing and will be missing some of the best walleye fishing the year has to offer. The walleye action is in great shape right now on lower pool 4 and Pool 5. The closer one gets to the rut, and the closer to freeze up for the ducks, the walleye action is only that much better. That all right though, less boat traffic means more fish for the rest of us Fall walleye nuts. Here is Jack Reynolds with his pig he got with my ol’ man on Tuesday.
A lot of things are happening right now in the fall migration of the walleye. Walleyes are starting to put their feed bag on and are doing it with force. No guess now if you have a bite or not. The best areas right now for us are side cuts that empty into the main channel. Look for cuts with lots of marsh and mud bottom. With water temps dropping a lot of species that hibernate in the marsh mud are making their way there. Right behind them has been the walleye. These walleye will tend to move in and out of these cuts all day long feeding on these species. Frogs, willowcats and baitfish all become potential meal. Here is Jack and Bob with there two big walleye of the day.
The best method right now for us has been throwing crank baits to the rocky side cuts, and trolling the long deeper side cuts. Fisherflick hair jigs have been hot in the evening. As soon as I can get my brother(Dylan) to figure out his new computer he will have some halacious walleye pictures to show you. Can you believe he was actually “walleye fishing”. I think I may have him converted now. Cross your fingers. He has been running the same program also-fishing side cuts or funneling areas. The best depth for all of us right now has been 6-8 feet of water. Lower the sun goes the shallower we go.
I would also like to thank Tony Apisa(&PAM) and “Rooster” for the great time and hospitality you guys provided to Scott Steil and I while we where at the RCL Championship. I can’t wait to see some of your guys fishing reports from pools 14-17.
Some people short-hand the phrase mud in-fested(sic) hole as “home.”
Nice fish Jarrad. Good to see you’re back home. Thanks for the update and info, I’m going to try something different in the morning than I had planned, your report made the lightbulb go on.
It sure was great to spend some time in the boat with you and scott. I sure did learn alot. Thanks for the report I want to get down there this week end but its not looking good.
