Last weekend I had a chance to head out to Sauk Lake for an afternoon of chasing some largemouth bass with a good friend of mine, Chris Winter. Though the tough cold front that came through Friday night, we were still able to connect with some pretty decent sized fish on Saturday.
The day proved to be kind of a mixed bag when it comes to technique and fish patterns. Chris is shown holding a nice bass he caught on a Jimmy D’s green pumpkin Hairpig jig while swimming it through coontail. I was catching most of my fish on a 3/8 ounce Strike King double willow bladed spinner bait around wood, weeds and docks while pulling it at a slow steady speed. A few of a our fish came on weightless 5” black & blue stick baits from Big Bite Bait company using a dead stick technique.
We ended up with about a dozen bass including a couple in the 18”- 19”length for the afternoon. We were finding fish in sand in 1-2 feet of water, 2-4 foot heavy coontail, as well as around and underneath docks.
With typical fall weather and fish being hard to pattern, it’s still worth the trip when you can C&R a few nice fish.
