It seems as though it’s been an eternity since I’ve posted a report. And for good reason too. Because it has been. These shortened days and ugly weather patterns don’t lend themselves to premium days on the water lately. It was a surprisingly nice night to be out even with a gusty wind, but the fish didn’t seem to mind and I was feeling the need to stretch a line with my Dad.
Our first stop was a small sand flat adjacent to a weed pocket with a fair amount of current rolling through creating a current seam on the outside. In previous years, the best bet was to cast upstream and bring the bait back with the current along the current seam. Last night I tried a different approach. I was casting the crank perpendicular to the current seam and brought it up onto the sand flat. Just before the crank hit the sand edge, it would get hammered. I caught 5 very nice fish like the one pictured here.
These fish are typically here every year during this time of the year. They are migrating to their wintering areas, which by the way isn’t too far from their spawning locations.
Because of the shortened days/early evenings we weren’t able to move around as much, but we did find another nice sand flat holding a school of Smallmouth like the one pictured. These fish also came on cranks near current.
There’s really not much technique to catching these fish. Boat position and control is a must. These fish are shallow and can be spooked very easily. More times than not, if I’m in a tourney, I’ll slip the anchor out and stay off the trolling motor. I’ve been known to make very long casts too.
I would suggest making the most out of any nice days, because the fish are stacked on the fall migration spots, and the fishing should only get better. Good luck fishing!
Looks like you had a good time Blue….. Some nice fish there!!
I think the next time I’ll see a bass is when one swims under me on the ice
Sounds like fun!! Was there a certain color or type of crank that you had the best luck with?
Nice report and pic’s Blue . Isn’t fall fishing great. I’m just starting to get dialed in down here on the Rock.
Sounds like a fun evening Blue.
I had my dad out as well last night fishing smallies.
Water pretty high down by you?
I was throwing a 1/2oz. chrome/blue Diamond Shad made by Strike King. As for the water quality, it’s not bad, but it definitely could get better. It’s about 6-8″ higher than the norm. The current is a little stiff, but it really helps to hold those fish in very specific areas. When you find them, you’ll find a pile of them. The deepest water we caught fish in was 4ft deep. As usual, avoiding debris like weeds is difficult this time of the year. I hope to get out again real soon.
