With the full moon cycle upon us I thought it would be a great time to spend a few days on the IGL’s.We do not get the awesome full moon bite that a place like Mille Lacs or other midwest hotspots get.But it if still fun to give it a try. Here is the sun going down on Spirit Saturday night.
My oldest boy Cole was in the boat with me a Sat and Sunday and we gave Spirit a heck of a going over.We were up early both days and fished late Saturday night. We did not get any big fish but we did catch alot of the smaller eyes that are thick in Spirit. We also spent a few hours jigging for perch. Here is Cole with a Spirit Lake perch.
Cole and I worked the shallows in the a.m.,pulled crankbaits during the day, worked live bait in the early evening, and then went back to cranks at sunset.Infact we long-lined shallow running cranks for about 3 hours Sat. night without a fish.We tried many differnt cranks/speeds/depths without results. When you fish hard your fishing partners can get a little tired.Chy had enough and caught a nap on Monday afternoon.
With Cole back to school on Monday I stayed and fished west for a few hours. There has been a very good perch bite going the past few weeks. When the sun was out the perch were very active but once the clouds came in they slowed down for me.With overcast conditions I spent some time fishing for eyes and picked up this nice 16" fish. Also caught a few short fish. The walleyes on West have such great color in them. This picture is not that good but this eye was a awesome gold color like you get from some Ontario waters. You will also notice that the perch have alot more color in them than a Spirit Lake fish.West Okoboji will be in it’s deep live bait bite very soon now.The angler that puts in his time in the deep water can be rewarded with a trophy fish.
