Mille Lacs walleye report 9-27-04

The crankbait bite has not yet started along the rocky shorelines on the eastside of Mille Lacs. Hook and I along with another neighbor put in some time fishing the morning and evenings this past weekend with very little luck.

In fact fishing was very slow, our highlight was seeing the sun come up!

Hook and I caught one small walleye early Saturday morning on a shad Rap. My neighbor Dale caught one walleye This morning. Not much to report!

The water temp I think is still on the warm side at 63 deg’s. The lake is also full of bait for our fish to eat. The minnows are jumping on the surface in the harbors and I am seeing schools of bait swiming under my dock.

The weather forecast calls for cooling temperatures. Along with the full moon this Tuesday night, I’m hoping to see some improvement soon……..I am hoping!

  1. I fish smallies out on mil lacs all the time but had never gone after the walleyes before. It was my 23rd bday over the weekend which means I had to get away from school and go fishing. And with how much everyone talks up the sept bite out there I had to give it a shot. So Sat night I went out there. And I wasn’t prepared for all the people. I took the same approach I do down on the river. “see all those boat. That is where I am not going” So I trolled raps down shorelines. And didn’t do too hot until about 11 pm. Found a nice rocky area that also had some sand and the key was cabbage. First fish was 26.5 inches. Continued fishing this one area and everytime we made a pass we would get a fish or two. Not the greatest of nights but we were pulling a fish every 15-20 min. And we even got one pig smallmouth. All my fish came out of 3-5 ft on husky jerks. With the exception of that one big one most of the fish were 20-22 inchs and then a few little 12-14 inchers. It wasn’t an amazing bite like I have been hearing about but it was still fun. And the smallie was definitally the best part. Smallmouth on my bday….can’t beat that.

  2. Thank you for the info. Looks like the warm September has delayed the fall bite – bummer. I have a chance to go so I’m heading up tonight for an evening of trolling. Hopefully we can find a few walleyes.

  3. I heard some reports that the last couple of nights, the crank bite has been improving! Maybe Hook and I fished during the wrong time of the night? I went to bed last night with boats trolling just out my window and I woke up to a boat trolling by at 4:30am this morning……..the guys are putting in the time, thats for sure!!!
