With the Frank Schneider Muskies Inc. tourney coming up this Friday thru Sunday, both halves of Hawg Hunters Guide Service opted for some arm relaxing bass fishing this week. Leading us back to a body of water that absolutely shines in the fall, Chisago and South Lindstrom. And like so many times in the past we left each day anything but disappointed. Pictured here is my Dad Ardie with hefty 20.5.
If you have never had the chance to get up NE of the Twin Cities for bass fishing action, you have no idea what your missing. Chisago/S. Lindstrom is a strict catch and release fishery, and has been for quite a few years now. It serves as a prime example of what CPR mentality can do for a lake. Average size of the Largemouth in this fishery is consistantly around 3 lbs, with some real bruisers over 20″ caught with regularity.
The fall pattern on these lakes is really simple. Spinnerbaits, spinnerbaits, and more spinnerbaits. The bigger the better, our best producer over the last couple of years has been the Woo Daves Smallmouth Series, pur/char or brn/char, with tandem willows, usually in the 3/4 oz size. Once the water cools the fish stack on the shallow weed flats and in weedy back bays. There are some good humps on both lakes that are worth slowing the presentation down for, Chompers 4″ tubes in Blk/Rd Flk, Northland Jungle Jigs in Blk/Blk and Blk/Pur tipped with Uncle Josh Pork also works very well. 50 fish days are common all the way up to ice-up. There also is a very healthy population of Pike mixed in, like this 35″ that came on my Dad’s first cast of the day.
Well, off we go to chase the mighty Ski with the masses, we have three boats fishing the tourney. Myself and partner Kevin Woitas will be on Leech pulling boards for Team Troller, Bob Bowman and his partner Mike Berg will be flogging the water on Lake Bemidji for Team Flacid, last but not least Billy Keilen and his boatmate Bruce will be working Cass for Team Ford. Wish us luck, this is a huge tournament, with much more than prizes and money on the line. This one is for bragging rights.
One shot for fun from the fair, and I’m out!!!
