How much is the changing weather effecting the fish? This week with the steep drop in water temp I decided to switch over to some fall presentations. Tuseday and Wednesday the water temp on Menomin was between 63 & 65 degrees. Quite a drop fron the mid 70’s last week.
Both days started off successful. I found that a slower presentation and deeper water would boat a few keeper eyes. Both vertical jigging and slowly dragging live bait rigs produced fish. Jig color did not seem to matter much, neither did size. Leeches by far outproduced crawlers. Fish were holding in 14 to 17 ft of water. The bite was not fast by all means but some patience will put a few eaters in the well for you.
Trolling main lake flats will still yield some multi species action. The 8-9 ft range around snags and drops seems to be the best. A wide range a baits and colors are taking fish, with no particular pattern being better. Run a variety of spinners and cranks and change color often. Crappies, perch, bass, and eyes are all being caught.
The bite on Tainter is a little faster. A good number of eyes, whitebass, and crapppies can be caught on both cranks and spinners. Target the 9 to 14 ft range on the upper lake. Both crawlers and leeches are producing, along with a variety of crank colors. Here are a couple pictures from Menomin. Sorry the pics taken in the rain on tainter did not turn out. See you on the water, Don.
