After recieving a tip that the large gills were biting it was time to head north. A quick stop at our favorite bait store (Schmidty’s) for waxies, leechs, and small crawlers and we were off to try for some of those large gills. We were traveling light with just a couple of ultralights and some ice fishing jigs. It didn’t take Jackie long once I rowed us to our spot to land this beautiful gill.
The gills we were catching ranged from a bright golden yellow to greens and purples. With the cold front that moved through Northern Wisconsin over the weekend I thought that the fishing would be slow but I was mistaken. We located active fish from 14 to 16 feet deep and we would would catch a half dozen or so then everything would just quit?
We quickly learned that if the gills stoped biting it was because of the numerous small jig thiefs that inhabited the lake. We lost probably a dozen jigs due to bite offs and our light 2# or 4# line breaking. Our next trip north we may target these toothy critters and see about catching some larger ones. The gills are biting so if your getting your ice fishing gear ready it’s time to grab the ultra-light and have a fish fry.
Great lookin’ gills Steve!

I also loose nice jigs to them Pike too. Great gills!
Nice gills and great pictures, leinieman!
Great idea to leave the gills on the hook before taking the snapshot. I really like the way those pictures turned out.
