As this years bass tournament chase has ended for me, I finally got a chance to hit some water I’ve been thinking about all summer. This past weekend my brother Tony and I headed out to Red Rock lake which is located about 20 miles west of Alexandria. Despite the shallow landing and green water, this lake has a great mix of coon tail, reeds, cattails, rock, wood and gravel that made for a fun day of fishing largemouth.
The cool temperature on Saturday morning made for a slow start, but things sure changed when the sun lifted above the trees and started producing some heat. As it warmed up, we caught many fish up to the 20 inch mark, most of the fish were in the 15”-18”class which are a blast to catch anytime. Although we only spent a half day at Red Rock ,we still were able to catch close to 40 bass.
We kept to a slow presentation most of the trip with a Texas rigged 5” stick worms and tubes to pull most of our fish. We were working around heavy clumps of slop, wood and docks to pull most of our fish in depths of 3 to 4 feet of water. The water was quite green with floating algae in some areas of the lake, but as we kept moving we were able to find cleaner water and the fishing sure seamed to improve along with the water clarity.
The day went by faster than I’d hoped, but it was still a blast fishing with a brother. Due to having a little patience at the landing and showing the fish a slow presentation it turned out to be a great day on Red Rock Lake.
Nice report Scott!
Those fish sure look healthy.
What style and color of stickworms worked best for you?
How were you rigging them?
I was using unweighted black and blue 5″ stick worms from Big Bite bait company and rigged them texas style. Very similar to your Yum Dinger and Senko’s. I like the Big Bite baits and the Yum Dingers over the Senkos because they last so much longer. Good Stuff!
