Like the title says, Bob Bowman of Hawg Hunters Guide Service has done it again. Another stellar weekend of Musky fishing on Cass, Baby, and Leech. Bob had the pleasure of sharing his boat with Tim Ohmann from Oklahoma, and Don Berger from Wyoming. That’s right, yet one more personal best hits the net! Pictured here is Tim Ohmann with his Sumo Piggie 50.5" Musky that savagely attacked a Fudally Flo-Green 10" Reef Hawg Sunday night on Leech Lake.
Tim’s fish had been raised 4 times prior to the actual hookup. Knowing that the fish was active, and not wanting to turn her off, Bob left after each follow, GPS marking the locale of the beast, then went on to hit other areas where fish had been raised, and give the big gal some time to cool off. The fish had a 22" girth, and was figured to weigh over 40 lbs. That day Bob and his group had 9 fish follow with 2 pushing the 50" mark, and all the rest except one well over 40". Needless to say the cool temps and windy conditions definitely got the big slobs agressively pursuing all that swims. All these fish were laying up on the deep weed edges (15′-18′), adjacent to deep water in excess of 30′. A slow methodical approach was the ticket, Tiger Tubes, Reef Hawgs, and Phantoms were the top producing baits. The trick to triggering these fish wasn’t neccessarily a constant retrieve but mixing it up eratically with pauses and falls.
Bob, Tim and Don also spent Friday night on nearby Baby Lake, which yielded two Muskies. The one pictured here was a 37" beauty that clobbered a Pearl White Giant Torra Tube. The fish hit at at 8:45 p.m. on a 8′ weedflat about 15′ from the boat, if you have never butted heads with a Ski after dark, it is an exercise of utter chaos in the pitch blackness. While Bob was in the process of releasing this fish, Tim ripped into a 35" Lunge while using a very rare Divani Tekneek Glider. The fish went Ringling Brothers taking flight on multiple occasions, and with light conditions being what they were, the fish had all occupants of the boat scrambling for what they thought was a true Moby [censored]. As it turned out just another healthy and growing beauty out of Baby Lake. Luckily for Bob, and unluckily for Tim the Energizer Bunny ran out of gas right after Bob’s fish got a snapshot.
But, don’t let all these beautiful fish fool you into thinking it was a walk in the park all weekend. Saturday was a 13.5 hour throw-a-thon on Cass Lake with 9 lethargic follows, and a few 30" class Pike to show for their efforts. The morning was fast and furious with 6 fish following in the first hour and forty-five minutes, but the action soon died and gave way to an eight hour drought without a single fish seen or caught. The pike pictured here Bob scored on a Black and Orange Bulldawg in 17′ of water, it hit the tape at 37 inches and like all fish from this weekend lives on to fight another day.
A big thanks goes out to Don Berger, Bob’s Uncle, the man responsible for the majority of Bob’s fishing knowledge dating back to a very young age. We all know it’s Don’s fault Bob is a fishing JUNKIE, Don has been quoted "Bob needs some professional counseling for his addiction, seriously before it is to late."
