Pool 5 Walleye Report

Well it has been a while since I have been back on Pool 5. I MADE myself stay on pool 5 all week to see what in world has been going on. I am glad I did.

The bite on pool 5 right now is in great shape. There are plenty of walleye to go around right now. I have not had any monster walleyes come to the boat this week but I have had lots of numbers. Just enough to keep me sticking around. Three different techniques have been working for me, Live bait rigging wingdams, Trolling side cuts, and trolling the tips of the wingdams. Here is Brian Sylvester with a walleye he got with me on lower 4.

With the low flow we have right now anywhere you can find current one should be able to muster up a few walleyes. Wingdams that have good current have been the best for live bait.

Side cuts with deep water and current have been good also. Pulling #5 shad raps in Craw pattern have been the best go to bait.

Trolling the tips of the wingdams have been the best overall presentation. Jumping from one wingdam to the next,to cover more ground, as been the best for me. Once I hit a few tips I head back and hit the ones I had fish on them earlier. It seems every time you go back to the ones that I caught fish on I would catch a couple more stragglers. Best depth on the tip of the wingdam was 6-8 feet. However the channel had to be deep on the tip of them. I did work hair for a while this afternoon. I would run the kicker motor up and down the face of the wingdam while working the hair jig from deep to shallow. I mangaged 4 walleyes this afternoon with just that presentation. Between my father and I this afternoon we managed 15 walleyes from 3 until dusk while working all these presentations. Here a couple eater I got while trolling a side cut.

I have not fished up near the dam at all but one person came in this afternoon(Sunday) with a two man limit of walleyes. With the cool weather we have had I am starting to see some of these fall presentations start to kick in. Pool 5 should have an awesome fall. We defintely are do. There doesn’t seem like an over abundant of shad this year so it should turn out to be a very productive fall.

  1. nice fish jarrad;
did you get any fish between wingies or just off the tips?
when your fishing side cuts are you out next to the main river or back in the cut itself?
    thanks jarrad

  2. Walleye Fool,

Yes we have been getting fish in between the wingies also. Mostly smaller while traveling between the wingies.

As far as side cuts…The ones I have been targeting are the main side cuts of the MAIN CHANNEL that lead to the backwaters. Going into the cut and the outside in the main channel have both been good.

They are still seeing fish up at the dam. Two boats limited out up there by 9:30 this morning.

  3. jarrad: that guy holding that fish in your report-is he the one they call crazy george? nice report

  4. Nice report Jarrod!
Not sure if that is the guy that they call “crazy George: or not! I know I saw him whistling one time!!!

  5. He does look like a young Crazy George though. Every once in a while you go by the guy, holding the fish above, and you can hear him mumbling. Or sing ” oh the farmers are in town trying to catch a fish again, you are never gonna catch a fish that way”

I did help him load his boat on pool 5 the other day Seemed real nice then and said fishing was so so…… I took that as he kept only 12 fish today with 6 over 27″.

Just an update on pool 5…. I was out tonight trolling wingdams and loaded up on some nice walleyes…even lost a couple of dandies..28,24 plus or minus. Couldn’t reach the net and lost them with my head turned to grab the net. Did mangage to keep a limit of eaters in 2 hours. I hit one wingdam trolled the tip and doubled up TWICE. Do you know what it is like reeling a fish in when the other one is still on the other line, it got a little intense tonight. Especially with a 2 year old standing on the net.

  6. crazy george has glasses..or else those two would look like cookie cutters…..ain’t no fish there farmer.
