White bass busting shad

White bass are busting shad like crazy on Pool 9 at the first several wingdams. Dawn and dusk find fish most active. catching 100 fish per trip not out of the question.

Anything white, chrome, shad will work–2-3 inches best size for bait profile

Two inch topwaters like little Pop-R’s, or that little Yo-Zuri popper are hot..especially in red/white or chartreuse/bone. Problem is too much down-time because there are too many hooks. In-line-spinners like the new Mepps Black Fury in the black/white color scheme are outstanding ! A #4 Mepps IN THE NEW COLORS is phenomenal!

Mepps sent me 3 of the new spinners. Only have one left. Using this bait with buddies, kin and clients we put over 500 white bass in the boat since last Wednesday! At least four year classes present, with fish tending to school by year class–Watch out for the magnums ! honest 16-18 inchers! White bass are OUTSTANDING eating if you put ’em right on ice, then fillet out the red "mud vein" before putting them in an aluminum foil roasting pan in milk overnite before freezing/eating

  1. Nice report!! I’ve been catching a ton of stripers too. Is that the best way to keep them from going soggy. I heard to soak them in sprite before you freeze/eat. Have you ever heard of that? I’ve caught them on the Mississippi and a ton of them on the Chippewa River. Most are 12″-16″ a few of them slightly bigger.

  2. This is a great time take kids out fishing as they can catch fish on almost every cast when the bass are on a feed like this. Great way to get them ”Hooked On Fishing.” Thanks for the report.
    Thanks, Bill

  3. We are getting the same kind of action down on pool 12 as well. Seems the whites are all over the place this year. I’m catching whites on wing dams that have never held them before, (that I’ve caught anyway ) And I seem to be getting a larger variety of year classes as well. Everything from 8-10″ up to 17-18″. One spot will hold all dinks, the next will hold all monsters! Great fun

  4. Have the same thing going on up here as well. Nothing better then going out and catching a fish every cast though. Gotta love it.
    Nice report Ted.
