West Okoboji,Aug 19,2004

I had a chance to get a few new faces in the boat today.Daniel and David Korang were in the area all the way from Virginia. In the past Doug Burns had taken them out but beings Doug no longer guides I got to spend my day with a couple of fine young men.
The morning was very cool with temps in the lower 40’s which is record cold for this time of year. The boys were very cold and couldn’t wait for that sun to get up and start to warm things up.Fishing was slow for the first few hours but David finally put this nice little largemouth in the boat.

We tried many different areas but could not get any type of bite figured out.We would get a few bites but it was a slow morning. Here is David with a little smallie.

We finally found a area along the shore that produced some bites and alot of fun.We could see fish under the over hanging tree’s.If we could get our bobbers close enough the fish we come out and attack our offerings. Here is Daniel with a gill.

I had a great day with Daniel and David this morning. We talked about alot of different things and it was fun to see their reactions when we could see fish.David also got to see a big northern take off after a gill he had caught.David said it was his best day ever fishing and I promised I would put his tally up on IDA for him to see.
5 green sunfish.
2 gills
2 smallie
1 perch
1 largemouth.
Here is David with a 14″ smalllie he caught before we had to return to the boat ramp.
I a final note about being in a hurry and safety.I have been on the nite shift this week so after this trip I had to hussle to get back home and make it to work on time. When I got home I thought I would jump over the trailer tongue-WRONG!! My foot hit on the way over and it flipped me over unto my back before I knew what hit me.It took me a few minutes to collect myself and check out injuries.I took a big chunk out of the back of my knee and a elbow that’s tore up a little. As I write this my knee hurts like crazy and it was tuff at work tonight. Please be carefull anglers. One good thing is the only one that seen me go down was my son Austin.
Best of luck.

  1. Ryan:

Thanks for the report, sounds like you had another great time on the water! Glad those young men enjoyed the day.

Is Austin Okay? I hope that he didn’t chuckle at Dad doing his Olympic imitations! Hope that you are okay and not hurt seriously.

Enjoy your next trip on the water, with the icepack!

  3. Nice job Ryan. Glad to see the guiding is steady for you. I can’t think of a better guy to take a couple kids out for a day on the lake. Keep up the good work bud.

  4. Great reports Ryan I,m looking forward to my trip over there in a couple weeks hopefully I get the walleyes figured out and have some pan fish time left

  5. I can’t think of a better way to vist an area than hooking up with a local and having them show you around. The water is just one way to see the area and when your talking young men, the lake is a perfect place to start

I have had the pleasure of sharing Ryans boat here on the Mississippi River and he is a class act I’ll bet the guys learned a couple of tricks from you,,,Keep’m smiling Ryan

One of these days Ryan I’ll be over to spend a couple of days…

    Keep up the great work

  6. Sounds like you guys had alot of fun on the water. But Ryan, best to leave the ”bloopers” to Bill Dance. You will live longer that way. Mixed bag of fish is always a great way to keep the boys intersted in fishing as you never know what will be on your line next. Thanks for the report. Thanks, Bill
