Targeting multi-species is the best bet if you are headed to Tainter. We Started off the day flatlining cranks on the upper lake. I was looking to match the panfish bite we had going last year. So far it just has not happened. The only thing trolling yielded was a couple of small pike so we opted for 3ways and bait. To be more precise, we were running spinners on 3ways.
Livebait was preferred, about 5 minutes after switching to spinners a eye hammered our offering. Just a little short though, taped at 14.75. The next pass yielded our best fish of the day. The first picture is Bobby with a nice white. (Sorry, forgot to measure) Running the same trolling pass produced a few more whites. The fish were on the main lake flat in 8ft of water. Our speed ranged from 1.2 to 1.8mph. The fish seemed to prefer the slower speed. Our best producer of the day was to run leeches on a hammered gold spinner. The second photo is a couple more taken on spinners. The best bite of the day was between 11:00 and noon, after that it slowed down quite a bit.
With the livebait bite slowing, we switched to puliing boards. Running in depths from 8 to 13ft on the main lake produced a few more eyes for the day. Perch colored wally divers ran 40ft behind the board was the key today. Either running boards or flatlining the key was to keep the bait from banging bottom. 1.8mph keyed the most strikes.
You may also want to try slip-bobber rigs or pitching jigs off of drops and edges. Target 11 to 13ft of water.
If you are looking for gills Lake Menomin is producing some nice fish. Tip a plain hook with a piece of crawler and fish near weedbeds. Have a good week and I will see you on the water, Don
