We are closing in on the fall season pretty fast and the fish are feeding up. We’ve had great multi-species angling this week. The walleyes sure are providing some nice action on Gull and Whitefish. It hasn’t been fast and furious but it has been good action considering it is the middle of August.
Gull has been full of small 10-12 inchers and those little guys have been biting along the weedlines in 14-16 feet. We did find some nicer fish this week down in Wilson Bay and on the main lake in 19-22 feet. Fish location lately has been affected by wind direction. The best spots have been windswept shorelines. Redtails fished slowly on a Lindy rig have produced the best results. Some anglers have also done well using Leeches on a floating jighead but if this is your choice you may have to deal with lots of sunfish and rock bass. They are really biting leeches right now. The Big Bass have been very aggressive lately on the Gull Chain of Lakes. We saw many bass in the 4-pound range with some tipping the scales close to 6 pounds. Top baits for big bass have been a weed-weasel tipped with a minnow or a jig and plastic worm combo. Spinnerbaits have also worked well. Look for bass to be on the weed edges in 12-16 feet. It seems that anglers are having good luck on most area lakes for the bass. Bass and walleye anglers have been finding lots of Pike on the weed edges. Trolling Rapalas or spinnerbaits has been producing lots of pike action. Crappies are biting in the evening hours on Upper Gull and Upper Mission. I recommend a Northland Thumper Jig. Troll slowly in 10-12 feet of water for some fantastic action. Fall will be here before we know it. Make sure to get the kids out again one last time and enjoy our great late summer fishing. Good Luck!
