Lake Wisconsin Walleye & Sauger Fishing Report

8/14/04 and 8/15/04

Lake Wisconsin walleyes are proving to be a little bit tougher for me the past two weekends. We’re still catching legal fish on each outing, but the real good action from early to mid summer has tapered off.

Flat calm conditions and heavy weekend traffic on the lake made for some tough conditions. Not being out for the last 3 weeks of July didn’t help any either.

Hitting the lake early in the morning and late in the evening when boating traffic subsides is definitely a plus.

The first picture above is a nice fat 18” sauger my brother Gerard caught on a jig/crawler combination. Night crawlers on both jigs and live bait rigs are still producing some legal fish.

Nancy, my wife, is showing off a couple of eaten size fish we caught trolling crank baits in the evening hours. The crank bait bite is kind hit and miss lately. If they don’t want to go, we switch to something different pretty quick.

The good news lately, is that we have been getting some very nice crappies mixed in with the walleyes. Most of these crappies have been running around 12 inches or better. Not monsters but not bad either.
